I attended a Leica Akadamie workshop in London at the weekend, on available light portraiture. I shot portraits for the first time using AF with face recognition, following comments on this forum that the SL's face recognition algorithms focus specifically on the eye. I've usually avoided face recognition, probably because I tried it in social and family settings where no one faces the camera for longer than a fraction of a second.

The results were totally convincing to me: almost all the shots were exactly focused on the eye; nor did I have to use the joystick to pick a focus point - I was able to concentrate entirely on composition (and the fabulous and professional model, Claire).

This is one shot with the SL + 24-90SL, at 90mm, f/4, 1/500s, ISO 1600. Main shot cropped to 3500 x 4400, close up at 100%.

Please ignore the stray hairs.

A classic motor racing shot in the tradition going back to the early days of the sport, but fabulous in colour and so sharp, and so much atmosphere - wonderful.

Did you get any shots from the lap 1 chaos at this point?

Did you use the electronic shutter? You can see the banding caused by the artificial lights which I think is caused by the use of the electronic shutter. This is something that has been commented on a lot with the A9, which is touted as being a sports, action and wildlife camera but in reality has severe limitations because it's only able to offer the very fast fps if you use the electronic shutter, which is a big problem under artificial light.

It's a real shame becuase it's such a great shot otherwise.

Looks like it was shot through the fence with the lens up against the fence.............is that right??

Neil

Possibly but I don't think that the banding you see in the image would be that narrow or well defined. Think about it - you're shooting at the long end of a lens to have a field of view that close. The front element of the lens is pressed right up to the fence itself so your 77mm diameter is going to be obscured by maybe, three links in the fence? That banding is not made by a fence, its made by the frequency rate of the lights used to light the track.

This is why the Sony A9 quoted 11fps is a bit of a cheat; because you can't use that anywhere you have artificial light.

We will wait see what Rupert has to say but I still say the lines you see are from the fence
