I took some flower photos today at Wisley, I went through them when I got home and was looking at them thinking...crap...crap....crap.....crap.

But now i've had some wine, and I've got music playing - my ability to be critical is on inhibited.

all with 90-280mm

The latest Sigma Art 135/1.8 Nikon mount with the Novoflex Nikon/SL AF adapter.

The Canon EOS/SL adapter and the Canon version of this lens was hopelessly unreliable for AF so I swapped to the Nikon version and adapter.

AF is quick but still not perfect ..... the lens elements clatter back and forth dementedly but do lock with precision. There is a tendency for the elements to move the full range from one extreme to the other before locking so it's worth using the 0.8m to 1.5m or 1.5m to infinity setting on the lens. This seems to work well most of the time. Low light AF performance is fine. It has locked up a couple of times in 500 or so images requiring a switch on and off ...... paradoxically only when re-focussing on things that were already locked and in focus.... which tends to be the sort of thing you do only when playing and testing rather than taking real photos. Not quite quick enough to chase bees around the garden ....... I locked on the flower then used peaking to move the camera to get the busy little things in focus before shooting. In fact having peaking on all the time with this lens is a good idea ..... the micro-contrast must be exceptional as anything in focus lights up like the Eiffel tower at night and slight manual adjustment either with the focus ring or body movement is very easy. Image quality is exceptional even at 1.8..... colour rendition is perfect and the images look like they have already been sharpened when opened in LR.

but ..... like almost all 3rd party fixes the AF is not a patch on the 24-90 or 90-280. It is fast enough, accurate enough and reliable enough to be usable without getting irritated and frustrated. I'm reasonably fussy and unreliable equipment drives me mad, but the odd glitch with this combo is more than compensated for by the image quality. Sadly my Marumi Achromat for macro doesn't work at all ...... these add on macro lenses rarely seem to work with lenses longer than about 100mm.

Bear in mind the Novoflex Nikon adapter only  allows AF and aperture change on a limited range of Nikon lenses (E) and a handful of the latest Nikon fit Sigmas, so you have to regard the Sigma+Adapter as a single unit financially unless you have any other compatible lenses.

It is not small or light either ........ basically the same as the 50 SL and 24-90 when the adapter is fitted....... but if you want quality and AF this seems to be the size these lenses end up. I specifically wanted a fast AF mid-tele alternative to carting about the 90-280 that I could use for candid portraiture and landscape detail use .... plus it has the same 82mm front end so I can use all my existing filters without yet more adapters ..... It works for me, but I am sure more sensible folk would just use the M series 135/3.4 with an adapter  manually.

Regarding microcontrast, focussing and colours - very similar to the Otus 28 mm. Outstanding. Edited by helged

My next door neighbor!

Actually my neighbor is a delightful widow but this creature loves her yard. These were taken

using every bit of the 280 reach on my SL!

Probably wise to shoot at 280mm and keep your distance!
