A smaller/lighter zoom-alternative to the 24-90 is the Vario-Elmar-R 35-70/4. It's a fine lens, it has macro at the long end (70mm), it shows almost no colour fringing, it's quite sharp into the corners, and it's a lens that I could potentially bring with me for hiking (in contrast to the the 24-90 that I find too large/heavy). Below is a quick shot in macro mode at f4. The macro oof rendering can be a little busy, particularly when highlights are present, but it's not that bad either. And the lens is on the affordable side for Leica glasses. So it is a compromise between versatility, optical quality, portability and price.

Puts: "The LEICA VARIO-ELMAR-R 35-70 mm f/4 is the first choice for a versatile standard lens for the Leica R system. In addition it covers three important focal lengths, the 35 mm, the 50 mm and the 70 mm. Its performance is as good, if not better than that of the comparable lenses with fixed focal length at the same apertures, the LEICA SUMMICRON-R 35 mm f/2, the LEICA SUMMILUX-R 35 mm f/1.4, the LEICA SUMMICRON-R 50 mm f/2 and the LEICA SUMMILUX-R 80 mm f/1.4."

The mentioned R-zoom has it's sibling in the Zeiss Contax Vario-Sonnar 35-70/3.4 (coming from the same manufacturer, apparently). I have one on order -_- , time will tell which to keep (one, both, none). The Contax has a one-ring focus adjustment mechanism that may pump dust onto the sensor; the Leica-zoom has a two-ring system that should be better in this regard. Again, time will tell. Or perhaps someone out there can share experiences with one or both of these - let's say, classical - zooms...

Another one with the Vario-Elmar-R 35-70/4. This time on the wide end at f8. (Impossible to make an objective judgement based on a 800px wide jpg, of course, but the original is far from bad, albeit not in native SL or Zeiss Otus land).

I also like this lens a lot. Compact, easy to carry and handle with SL. This photo @35mm/f8 was taken during x-country skiing trip, 2 hrs in -20C temperature, camera on all the time - just worked normally.

Trial with macro - works for me.
