Tony Wright Posted November 7, 2015 Share #1 Posted November 7, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Plea for help from the highly esteemed forum: I would be most grateful for advice with regard to a problem my M has developed after eight days ownership from new. In the past I have owned an M8 and an M9 which have been great. I had a few problems with focussing the M8 and advice from the forum was very valuable. My M was working perfectly yesterday. Today it has developed a number of problems: 1. When turned on the shutter speed is indicated for a second or two only to be replaced by the exposure compensation which then remains permanent. 2. The thumbwheel now will not do anything but alter the exposure compensation. 3. On going to SET menu : ISO the menus for Max auto ISO; Max exposure time and Auto ISO are now inaccessible. 4. Pressing the focus button has no effect. Apologies if this has been posted with a solution in the past - I am uncertain how to search. Turning on and off and removing and recharging the battery and resetting the factory presets have not altered this. I wondered if reinstalling the firmware might work but can't remember how to do this. I would be most grateful for advice as this has made me very sad! Cheers Tony

Cheers Tony re#1 - I have a related question on Exposure Compensation, not a feature I normally use but I tried it yesterday on M246 as I was using a red filter and the meter was underexposing. I had the same experience - shutter speed appears only briefly (and seemingly inconsistently) through the viewfinder, then all it would show me is the +0.7 of the Exposure Comp setting. It totally threw me at first as I thought the (new) camera had failed somehow, until I realised what 0.7 meant. Is this normal behaviour with Exposure Compensation? It's nice to be reminded it's on but fairly useless not to be able to see my shutter speed? Is that the only way it works? No options to change it? It's not for me if it can't be changed, I may as well work manually. The shutter speed would appear for a fraction of a second, maybe (maybe not), then the EC reading just remains steadfast in the Viewfinder whilst I had the Metering locked. re: #2 above - I'm fairly certain that's a menu option - to change the thumbwheel behaviour. Whilst I'm here, I might as well take the opportunity to complain about the 'focus' button. Why on earth put an *identical* slightly recessed/awkward button on the front of the camera just a finger's width from the lens release button?! When I tried the Focus Button + Thumbwheel to change Exposure Compensation, I noticed my finger occasionally stumbled to the lens release button without me realising! I broke into a coldsweat just thinking about the possibilities there! Old news I'm sure, just new to me sorry.

Old news I'm sure, just new to me sorry. - On the MP-240 you only see shutter speed when you select Aperture mode, if you are selecting shutter speed manually, you will see only the compensation value and indicator if it is over or under exposed. - I think you need to disable direct adjustment in the menu to disable the thumbweel from adjusting exposure. - I pressed the lens release button many times by accident, but the lens are so tight nothing happened. Chances of the lens falling out are slim unless you turn them. But I agree the focus button is not well placed and too hard to press. Not sure how the M246 differs from the MP-240, so things might be different.
Guest )-( Posted November 9, 2015 Share #7 Posted November 9, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks. Just tested it and it just shows the EC value, no arrows/dot for over/underexposure. The shutter speed sometimes flicks up for a nanosecond, not long enough to read what it is. So with: - Exposure Compensation Set - Auto (Aperture Priority Mode) The camera just tells me what the Exposure Compensation value is, nothing more. I think I'll file it along with M9 Discreet Mode as 'needs work.' (i.e.; won't be using that.) re: The lens release button. Yes, very unlikely the lens would turn as well but, yikes all the same. FlashGordonPhotography Posted November 9, 2015 Share #8 Posted November 9, 2015 When you first turn the camera on you should see ISO displayed for a couple of seconds. And an SD card warning if there's no card. In aperture priority the camera should display exposure compensation when half pressing the shutter button for about a second and then show shutter speed. When not pressing the button or with zero EC the shutter speed will be displayed. The bottom dot mean an EC value is set and the top one means you are pressing the shutter button and have exposure lock. In manual mode the shutter speed id replaced by the exposure indicators, but the behaviour is as above. Please Mr Leica, add an option to display shutter speed in manual mode. jaapv Posted November 10, 2015 Share #9 Posted November 10, 2015 The focus aid button will have no effect except activating focus peaking if you have set the magnification to 1x by the thumb wheel ( settings are 1x , 5x and 10x) using Live view or the EVF. Obviously it will have no effect at all on the optical viewfinder. The exposure compensation can be set to thumbwheel only in the "set`` menu under EV compensation -> direct-> on. MarkP Posted November 10, 2015 Share #10 Posted November 10, 2015 Please Mr Leica, add an option to display shutter speed in manual mode. Gordon You are so right Gordon. This is my only real complaint about my M7, M9 (now gone), Monochrome and M240. It would be so easy to add via firmware and those who don't want it could just turn it off. Turning on and off and removing and recharging the battery and resetting the factory presets have not altered this. I wondered if reinstalling the firmware might work but can't remember how to do this. I would be most grateful for advice as this has made me very sad! Cheers Tony Hi Tony. Hope this helps. 1. This was answered above. 2. The thumbwheel alone is only available to change the ISO value if you have entered into the ISO screen via the SET Button. If, you entered the ISO screen via the ISO Button then the thumbwheel is inoperative by itself. You can only change the ISO value by concurrently holding the ISO Button while turning the thumbwheel. Otherwise, you could change your ISO setting without knowing if, you inadvertently hit the ISO button and moved the thumbwheel. 3. When viewing the ISO screen, it is normal for the bottom 3 choices to be greyed out when you have selected an ISO value, other than AUTO, in the top choice. If, you want to see the bottom three choices: Select Set button --> choose ISO --> Turn thumbwheel (alone) to AUTO. Now the bottom three choices are available and no longer greyed out. 4. Pressing the focus button while concurrently turning the thumbwheel only changes the EV comp. when you select: SET Button --> Exposure Compensation --> Direct Adjustment: OFF. When set to ON the thumbwheel alone will adjust the EV comp. Hope this has helped explain the behavior of your M. Rick p.s. When you get the above sorted out Japp and I will try and explain the utterly useless forth choice on the ISO menu. You being an owner of previous M cameras will immediately see the why it should be removed in the next version of the M.
