New Leica M in September 2016? The speculations.

What a winner for Leica this could be, take the sensor and EVF from the SL and place into a M Style body with the Leica UI and proper width lens mount for M glass. It's clear many SL users are using the camera with M Glass. Cheaper to manufacture then M without a RF, Cheaper then SL with its tank like build. Aperture on lens, Speed dial on top, ISO on back. No need to chimp with a WYSIWYG EVF, so no need for a rear screen, even less cost. Settings and chimp where needed can be done in the VF. Most Pro users of Fuji hybrid take most shoots with EVF because they can't afford to make a mistake. Me I use both, turn the camera on in EVF, check my settings then more to OVF. If the above camera has Video also, fantastic manual lenses, with real Depth of Field markings are how Pro Camera folk work. Then in September bring out the new M, new sensor perhaps 26MP. After all these years of Fuji copying Leica , I can see Leica doing their own M (XPro) M-D (XE) and SL (a -XT) versions.

An EVF only, M Mount rangefinder style camera seems inevitable to me.  Perhaps this will be it, perhaps not.  If indeed it is and it lacks a review screen, its odd, but not the end of the world, assuming its been build to a price point thats in Q territory.

I'm all for a "M" camera with an EVF in lieu of the traditional RF mechanism as an option in the form another M-mount camera in Leica's line-up.  But first and foremost I want to see the next M simply upgrade the current M-240 / M-M / M-P with a better hot-shore EVF and much better Live View performance (moveable magnified view and significant reduction in shutter lag).

As for no rear LCD --- how awkward to toggle through menu's and try to change parameters while looking through an EVF.  My face would block all the buttons on the left side of the camera, so the right side of the camera (where I hold the camera) is going to have a cluster of buttons...?...  And when taking pictures and friends want to see them, they have to look through the EVF at my adjusted diopter setting - which is most likely going to be blurry for them.  Plus, just the awkwardness of that - they have to press the right buttons, and not press the wrong buttons (losing playback).  Plus I really don't like the idea of other people's "eyes" touching the EVF - like women's mascara flaking off on the EVF glass - yuck...  Or make-up rubbing off on the back of the camera.

If all the info+pic is available in "state of the art" built in EVF, hopefully, then why do we need LCD? This is how I use my Nex-6 (since my LCD is becoming crappy for some reason).

That is right, and we would be looking at an interchangeable lens Q with an M-compatible mount, not at a true M camera in that case. An attractive camera for sure.

I am thinking.... Why can't an iPhone size lens/sensor be added in the front to give a 28mm view in EVF and then superimpose a smaller and actual view (zoom able) from the lens in between!!

We could see outside frame lines even without RF. I think I should patent this idea. :)

Can we keep the posts to the M camera system (RF).  This is the M sub-forum, after all.

Writing stuff like, I'd like to have a hermaphroditic M with a built in EVF  and a RF or a castrated M with only an EVF is like saying I'd like a girl, but with other parts.

Let's not get too confused about what a makes a girl a dame.   :D

I could agree, but what if Leica should decide to shift from a technical designation (i.e. M applies to the focusing system) to a type designation (i.e. M means M-mount)?  In fact, if we consider the past, that is exactly what they did with the M1 and MD.

After all, it are the parents  who decide to call a boy Sue... :p

It would be fun to see the reaction of the Chief Bartender on another forum should it happen

A Q with M mount would probably be called an "M" camera the same way as MD and MD-2 film bodies i'm afraid. Not that i approve it but a semantic shift from M(esssucher) to M(irrorless) is to be expected soon or late i suspect.

Haha, Jaap...and others.

I'd love an M8 or M9 style without live view on a big screen.   Just in the viewfinder. Both electronic and the usual optical focusing.

I think Leica looses a lot of people with old eyes...I'm young-old but am starting to notice difficulty with my eyes and focusing my M8.

But the "form factor" (ghastly term) is so appealing; I just don't have any fun with any other camera.  The rest are blunt shovels.

Having said that...I'm still happy bumbling along with my 10 year old M8's.

Thank you Jaapv, yours is the simplest and most sensible posting on this thread so far. Anyone wishing to cannabalise a perfectly good M camera system and replace the RF with an EVF, ( urghhhh! ), or an expensive and complicated RF/EVF "upgrade" already has the choice of going to the SL, and if as you suggest Leica develops a M mount Q then there's the camera the EVF/AF enthusiasts could be happy with, like a digital CL. I might even go for that myself, but leave the OVF/RF M alone please.

For me there's nothing to replace the M's OVF/RF. The ability to use the hot shoe EVF answers for the rare times I need what the OVF cannot do. The M's EVF isn't bad, not great, but not bad, for me it does the job and if I would want anything better then there's the SL option to turn to.........which I wouldn't for a number of personal preference reasons. When do I want an autofocus EVF my Q compliments my M's perfectly, with both systems I feel well covered.

For me the M as it is is just fine, ok there's a few niggly things, but nothing that can't be addressed in firmware upgrades. All in all after some four years of use it's still very much a "keeper", there's nothing I can think of that would make a change up to a next generation M desirable.

This whole idea of making the M a Q with interchangeable lenses only panders to folks that don't really want a RF.  Which is fine for those here that have made it obvious by your posts that you really were never RF shooters or are not anymore.  So, for those that don't really want a RF:

1.  Go all the way and request M lenses without the RF helicoid in them... it will make them more compact and a lot cheaper.

2.  No more frame lines... just keep your other eye open if you want to see outside the frame.

3.  Take the DOF scale off the lenses, you can see what is in focus in the EVF.

4.  Ask for a more accurate focus confirmation system... you'll need it for lots of situations.

5.  Ask Leica to call the new camera Sue.   :p

Why all that venom for a few gals and guys who would like to use their excellent M lenses for situations where the lovely RF is usable but not optimal or not usable at all?

Rick explained to me that it isn't venom but style.

Ah, yes, that's entirely different, then. That's what round-enders usually do, of course, and I should have recognized it as "style" right away.

I'm all for a M with internal EVF :

A optical RF camera will still be my first choice, but when ISOs get up to >5000 and it's really dark, EVF night vision view is the way to go.

The clip on EVF humps are too easily catch on bags and get knocked.

Have both O-RF and EVF models seems like a great way forward.
