The lenses use the same filter as many of the S lenses, so they really are large. As for the picture of the guy holding it - either he's got very small hands or...

I hope that the SL lenses don't have the same Shite AF motors as the S lenses have and break :)

It's a she holding the camera, not some big fellow.

The SL is almost the same size as the Leicaflex SL II.

I believe this is going to be a fantastic camera.

And, of course it is too big. Leica is making a professional camera with dual card slots, large capacity battery, excellent EVF, sonic dust removal and the like.  Add an AF lens and it is going to be even bigger.  The smaller Sony a-series get pretty big and unwieldily when you add an AF zoom, as well.

This is not supposed to be a small camera.  But, it is pretty compact next to a big Nikon dSLR.

Want smal... Mmmmm.

I'm surprised that Leica didn't 'follow' the Q design features particularly with regards to lens design (aperture ring, focus scale). I wonder if by trying to accommodate almost any type of lens (M, S, R, T and others) that they have perhaps made a mistake with the native design.

As for the looks, I think it looks a bit like a Pentax K-01! Or similar to some Braun designs of the 1980's.

The only thing I might be interested in is Leica SF-40 Flash Unit.

Will it  work with the M?

Yes, I noticed that and thought it was interesting. Looks like a rebadged Nissin i40 (which is not a bad thing as the Nissan has a manual knob to control output). I suppose the demise of Metz has brought on the development of the two new flashes. I'd be surprised if it didn't work with the TTL capability of other Leica cameras but you never know with Leica.

Sorry 'bout that.

The SL II has been described as being big, heavy and clunky. Ming Thein has a picture of the new camera with some other bodies on his site. It still looks pretty darn big but would probably look better with an M lens mounted.

What a waste. I hope they did invest too many of their resources into this camera. There is nothing classic about it. It is too expensive for a "rangefinderless/mirrorless" camera. Leica would do better to upgrade the M and offer the high-res electronic viewfinder as an external-mount slip on. Due to the cost, this camera will likely be less successful than the T. You think Leica would have learned a less from that camera.

The camera is not that bad. The body has some impressive features. The problem for me is the lack of real telephoto lens. I need a body that can serve as a backup for the M and do things that require a d750/810 with fast zoom lens (200-300mm). A combination of 24 megapixels and 200mm zoom is not going to cut it. Price wise I am better off purchasing a Nikon with 300mm glass, and another used M for backup.

Too bad. I hope the system matures, I like the camera's ruggedness, the joystick AF and the reported IQ, and the fact it will play well with M lens.  This new line has potential to keep a photographer in a Leica ecosystem.  The SL line may evolve enough to not only be an M backup but also to fill the gap for fast AF rugged action/wildlife photography  that lies between the needs for medium format/studio (S), and rangefinder photography (M).

However, until this happens, I will cheer that the SL does very well and stick with the M.

The lens is a 90-280mm 2.8-4, not 200mm. That's a very usable range for shooting action and events. To me it looks like an awesome event and sports lens.

I don't think the SL offers enough to justify it's premium price point. And I do not see a reason to get it to replace my Canon system, which is what I currently use for shooting sports and events.

And this is a problem. We all want Leica to have a hit product to help support the M line. I think the SL is priced out of the market.

Cant remember if its the S typ007 or the Phaseone XF that shows focus distance, nearest and furthest points infocus on the top LCD, like the engraved DOF scales on a lens would.

As for the SL - i wont be buying one - it looks huge - i though the idea of Mirrorless was to make smaller, lighter cameras ?

Yep, the 007 shows this info on the top display.

OOoops all my writing effort for nothing, since I cannot read. :(

you are right 280mm is great.

Well then it looks like a promising system, albeit expensive. I guess might not be buying that Nikon...

For me the bottom the  line will be how nice it plays with M lens. And I will wait, don;t like to be an early adopter.

And not a very useful one either.  Too bad she couldn't have mentioned something concrete about her experiences actually using the camera.  Like, how did her images turn out.   :)  She could have written pretty much as good a review from reading their advertisement.

Ming, on the other hand, seems to have done his usual excellent work. http://blog.mingthein.com/2015/10/21/premiere-review-2015-leica-sl-601/

Camera/body combo looks like it should come with trailer hitch.  I've never owned a lens that uses 82mm filters.  How much are those dudes :)

Advantage:

compared to DSLR: You can shoot with excellent M lens. (Someone should show pic of SL+40summicron-C :) )

to A7xx: M wides work better. EVF resolution, silky shutter...

Disadvantage:

- lagging in mega pixel race.

- $$$ ... ouch !! :(

There... Now you know all that is needed to know. :)

Now that all the specs are out, it seems that Leica rather than positioning the mirrorless as complementary to the SLR (which is what everyone else is doing -- focusing on compact lenses with limited range and apertures), they want the SL to replace the SLR.  Hence the focus on fast action, high rez finder, fast apertures, long tele end, etc.   I don't know, maybe there is a market for that.  But one way or another, I think the aesthetics / industrial design of this camera betrays that objective. It is just so me-too, uninspiring and lazy.  They didn't seem to spend time re-thinking what a mirrorless can be from an ergonomics perspective.
