MarkP Posted September 19, 2015 Share #1 Ā Posted September 19, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) SYDNEY AND THE SUMMITAR Ā So I was given a Leica IIIf with 1948 Summitar a few years ago. Unfortunately the lens was badly fogged, almost useless especially in bright light, and was not repairable. Ā I just received a 1952 unit I recently purchased and it is indeed in excellent condition with pristine glass. Ā I used it for the first time around Sydney today and am very pleased with the rendering. Ā I planned on shooting both with the Summitar and a 2.8/50 Elmar-M for comparison but was having too much fun with the Summitar to take it off. Ā Ā Very nice using a 63 year-old lens on a 2 year-old camera! Ā Chifley Plaza, Sydney Monochrom v1, 2.0/5cm Summitar Ā Welcome, dear visitor! pico Posted September 19, 2015 Share #3 Ā Posted September 19, 2015 Good find, Mark. Your Summitar probably has the late, improved coating. Does it have the round aperture or hex? Leica mixed them up. Some earlier post-WWII had round, then Leica reverted to hex, then round again. Ā Aside: I don't know how the devil I did it, but my Summitar will not collapse. It seems to have a tiny piece of something stuck in the barrel. I'm stumped!

It seems to have a tiny piece of something stuck in the barrel. I'm stumped! Ā Thanks Pico, Ā The vendor was apparently an ex-Leica technician who had serviced the lens before sale. The front element coating is indeed different to my older lens. The aperture is round. Ā Ā I was very surprised to see how well this lens performed. It also has the original cylindrical steel lens hood fitted. Ā Regards, Mark

Ā Regards, Mark Ā You did very well. I like the lens, too. It copes with contrast nicely. For the rest, the original lens shade is difficult to find. The standard # 12585 for the Summicron works on the Summitar as well.
250swb Posted September 20, 2015 Share #9 Ā Posted September 20, 2015 Great pictures Mark. Ā You will be able to buy an adapter for mounting modern filters and lens hoods, can't remember the official Leica name for it but they are on Ebay as an aftermarket part. With that the Elmar M lens hood works well. Mine is a coated lens from 1946 with the round iris. Now all you need to do is amaze yourself with the bokeh wide open, no need to lick a toad or pop a tab of LSD to get the same effect Ā Steve

tobey bilek Posted September 20, 2015 Share #14 Ā Posted September 20, 2015 Summitar is a great lens except for wider stops where it is soft. Ā But that is nice for some portraits.

MarkP Posted September 23, 2015 Author Share #19 Ā Posted September 23, 2015 So let's see what you can do with it. Ā I must say that shooting with these old lenses is quite liberating. I don't ALSO think about getting the best out of the lens technically, as I do with my latest-and-greatest lenses, but just concentrate on the scene I want to capture.
