Very sorry about posting. I'm sure this has been asked many times before.

I need a 46mm filter for my 28f2. Will a B+W F Pro cause a vignette? I really can't see why it should but I read online... And now need some guidance.

Cheapest I can find online is £18.99, which I think is pretty good. Free postage too.

I don't think you'll get any vignetting with a 28.  I have a 46mm Hoya UV on my Zeiss 21mm f2.8 and there's no vignetting with that.  You'll be fine.

Cheers

Mark

single coat (£) vs multi coat (££)?

digi sensors don't need uv filters right?

this is just front element protection

I have no idea. It's there to protect the front element.  On reflection, it's probably multi coat and purchased about 12 years ago.

i may take it off now I have the lens hood for the 21mm (££!!).

I get a mild but annoying case of IR contamination with my M's. I shoot fabrics a lot. So I have purchased B&W UV/IR filters for all my M lenses, except my WATE (which apparently gets a cyan edge with the UV/IR filter). None of my lenses, including the 28mm cron have any vignetting issues.

I like B&W 007M CLEAR MRC filters if you are just going for lens protection. Leica lenses have uv protection built into the lenses so uv filters not required. Skylight will give a warmer effect, but were designed for film use and I prefer to adjust in LR if required. I use this filter with my 28/2 and no vignetting at all. Good luck. :)

UV filtration doesn't serve any purpose on the digital M's but it doesn't have any effect above and beyond the James Bond filter either, so whichever one you can get cheaper.  You can find a lot of used UV's in perfect condition, the Bond you'll probably have to buy new so it will cost more.  If you go with the UV, make sure it says "MRC" or "Multi-Resistant Coating".  I believe all the F-Pro versions are, but the earlier type came in single-coated also.  Those are more apt to give you flare and reflections.  In my experience the MRC's are virtually transparent in that regard.  It's easy to see the difference if you hold the filters in your hand and look at your reflection.  In the MRC's you almost can't see any.

I agree but with Amazon pricing there is no point buying second hand! Yes I got the MRC version. Was seeing SC version for £19 and this one cost £25. I was actually looking for a non uv MRC filter but they don't make them; or at least I could not find it online.

I didn't know James Bond made filters? ;-) are they made in Germany?

[...] Honestly why one would bother with a Leica filter is beyond me.

Been using filters from many brands but i prefer Leica's generally. The glass of the later is easy to remove so i can use UV/IR glass alone with some lenses (40/2, CV 21/4) and the same or other glass with legacy filter mounts like 13161, 13171, 13173, 13176, 13191, 13196, 13206, etc. FWIW.

You take the glass out of the filter thread?

Typically I've picked up used B+W MRC UV filters for $12-20 USD, which is about half to a third of the new cost anywhere.

I call the MRC clear protection (non-UV) filter the James Bond because the code # is 007.

I've transplanted B+W MRC and Heliopan (UV/IR) glass into the older Leitz mounts either for esthetics (as on my collapsible Summicron 50) or necessity (43mm for my Summilux 50 so the hood will fit over).  Otherwise I wouldn't use the Leica filters or their glass, which TTBOMK are all single or double coated and far more prone to ghosting and flare than the multicoateds from B+W or Heliopan.

Got ghost images in night pics with any sort of mono- and multi-coated filters so i don't use them at night any more but aside from that, ghost/flares did not attack me in 30+ years so i think they will leave me alone now ;).
