Just got a brand new Sandisk Extreme 8GB 45MB/sec card SDSDRX38192A21.

Could anybody here advise me on how to correctly " treat " my SD card?

Here is what I customarily do:

with camera switched off insert card in camera

boot camera

Format card in camera
Shoot up to 10 DNG + JPG fine image pairs in about 5.5 sec with
camera set to "S".
Camera takes 54sec to completely write all buffered files to card.
Switch of camera
Remove card from camera.
Lock card.
Download card via Lexar USB 3 card reader LRW307URBNA.
Eject card via Apple command ⌘ + E
Unlock card
Reinsert card in camera
Reboot camera
Reformat card in camera.
Shoot new images

Would you think this to be appropriate SD practice or do I need to change anything in my workflow?

Much obliged,
Mark

Lock card.

.....

Unlock card

I have had the lock tabs break by doing this so I no longer use them as the card is effectively useless without the tab in place.

Your procedure is good other than the use of SD Formatter, that said I used to do all this but now operate rather more badly, in that I simply use the cards and don't worry about whether I erase, interchange cards and cameras or anything much else to be quite honest. I've had no problems as a result, but then I do buy 'good' SD cards sourced from 'good' suppliers (i.e. they are what they are claimed to be). I do at times use SD Formatter but am somewhat haphazard in doing so. I have my suspicions that a dodgy card is quite simply that - if a card gives me trouble I bin it but haven't had to do so for a few years now.

So could we sum this up as follows ?

1st  purchase quality SD card from an authorized dealer.

2nd  with camera switched off insert card in camera

3rd  boot camera

4th  set camera to S

5th  format card in camera
6th  shoot DNG + JPG fine image pairs

7th  Switch of camera
8th  Remove card from camera
9th  (optional) Lock card
10th Download card via Lexar USB 3 card reader LRW307URBNA.

11th (optional) Reformat card in SD Formatter selecting "Quick" mode option
12th Eject card via Apple command ⌘ + E
13th Unlock card if card had been locked during download
14th Reinsert card in camera
15th Reboot camera
16th Reformat card in camera or alternatively delete images in camera to allocate image spaces

 Proceed to shoot new images

I had Sandisk Extreme  8GByte UHS-1 SD cards FAIL completely after using SDFORMAT. Sandisk accepted the cards back and replaced them twice. It might have been a bad rev level that has since been corrected, but I have not bought one since. I use the slower 4x sandisk and PNY cards. The current Sandisk Extreme card has worked for a few years, but I use it only in a Ricoh CS-1 and use in-camera format only. Some of these "extreme" cards do not seem compliant with the SD standard.

But do a full overwrite if you (suspect that you) have problems with your card.

We disagree on that, Jaapv. Overwriting does not do an integrity check, nor does it touch the protected section of the card which records bad blocks/sectors.
