Hello

After looking at some of my older and newer lenses I thought of sharing the information how the focal lengths are engraved after the infinity meter or feet scale.

SUMMILUX 1.4/50 Asph No4266xxx, also to the right of M and under feet the 2 digit  number 16 is engraved indicating a 51.6 mm focal length.

Apo Summicron-M 1:2/90 Asph No.3890xxx, to the right of M and under feet the two digit number 10 is engraved indicating 91mm focal length.

Elmar 1:4/90 No1920xxx LTM, to the right of M and under feet the. two digit number engraved is 00 confirming a 90 mm focal length.

Elmarit M 1:2.8/90 No. 3806xxx (1997), to the right of M and under feet the two digit engraved number is 15 referring to 91.5 focal length.

Summilux-M 1:4/75 Germany No. 3837xxx, to the right of M and under feet the two digits are 50.

Elmarit 1:2.8/135 Canada no.2424xxx, to the right of feet and under Canada the digits are 55. (1970)

Apo-Telyt 1:3.4/135, No.3853xxx (1998) to the right of M and under feet the two digits are 57.

It is useful, Al.  Thank you. Apparently Canada followed their own convention.

It is still a terrific, spot-on lens!

No by sure on Viso lenses, don't know about R; but I agree that this indication on lenses' barrel is strictly related to the delicacy of RF coupling... probably is an info that is useful to be found quickly by technicians who have to carry on lens'calibrations (or anyway, some kind of maintenance).

Hello Everybody,

With both "R" & "M" lenses:  Some have these 2 digit numbers. Some do not.

It would appear that these numbers are there to better help people who are assembling lenses to more easily co-ordinate components & hold them within tolerances.

If a lens head with a focal length accurately calibrated to 1/10th of a millimeter is combined with a focusing mount of the same focal length accurately calibrated to the 1/10th of a millimeter:

It is easier to fine tune the lens head & focusing mount together than it would be if each of the the 2 separate components had only been calibrated to a tolerance of 1 millimeter.

Best Regards,

Michael
