algaesnaps Posted August 9, 2015 Share #1 Posted August 9, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I decided to enter the Leica digital world and bought a Leica M8 serial number 3201497 about three weeks ago with only 3500 actuations. My question is that the front 'M8' engraving underneath the shutter button is not coloured in the usual white paint like all the other text engravings on the rest of the top plate, but left in the plain black finish? lovely camera in excellent unmarked condition and am using it with a Voightlander Nokton 40mm 1.4 as a standard 52mm equivalent lens. It would be interested in hearing from anyone as to the reason for this unpainted M8 inscription. Many thanks!

ShivaYash Posted August 9, 2015 Share #2 Posted August 9, 2015 Probably been scratched out by the previous owner.
algaesnaps Posted August 9, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted August 9, 2015 No, the white paint has definitely not been scratched out., it was manufactured this way without a white paint inscription, also it has quite a late serial number for an M8 being over 3200000. Looking forward to any other comments on both the lack of white paint and quite high serial number. Many thanks!
MarkP Posted August 9, 2015 Share #4 Posted August 9, 2015 Some of us liked the camera black without the M8 or M9 painted in white, and changed to red to a black dot. I picked the white paint off my M9 with a wooden toothpick - it comes out very easily. Or perhaps it just started peeling so the previous owner finished the job. lct Posted August 9, 2015 Share #5 Posted August 9, 2015 The black M8 (not M8.2) is black anodized IIRC. If so a drop of acetone will remove the white paint in a breeze w/o any scratch on it.
earleygallery Posted August 9, 2015 Share #6 Posted August 9, 2015 The paint simply fell off in some cases, it would have had paint originally but it fell off or the previous owner simply removed it.
pico Posted August 9, 2015 Share #7 Posted August 9, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) The paint simply fell off in some cases, it would have had paint originally but it fell off or the previous owner simply removed it. The previous owner was probably bored watching TV and wiped it off using a common solvent or picked it out. NO MATTER, anyone can restore it on minutes using a white lacquer stick. Get one. Rub it against paper until the surface yields to a smooth state. Run it over the lettering and wipe off the excess. It hardens in 48 hours. Be happy.
