I agree.  The EVF on the T was pretty good, but the black out when you took a picture was hopeless.  I understand the Q is better.

As I see it, this is a threshold camera - in its flagship cameras, it has had a frame (Leica III), a coupled rangefinder (M cameras), single lens reflex (R & S), AF (the S cameras) and now hopefully EVF & AF.  It will have to be very good, as EVF has significant problems to date.  If you're going to look through the lens, the SLR on the S camera sounds as good as it gets ...

Can't wait to receive my iPad Pro. It's here, it's full sized, it's with WiFi and GPS, it's touchy feely, it calls and chats, it makes a great backup camera, and I can even see the water on Mars.

Plus it's a great companion to my M9-P.

Mmmmmmmm!  :D

Jeff

You know me mate......I thought someone else would have bitten before now :)

I'll be bugging you again in 23 days time when I unbox that Eizo monitor...............

Later

The La Vida Leica website suggests the new SL has “Auto Focus in-camera” and introducing a Sony A7RII me too product by accomodating a myriad of lenses with differing mounts and manufacturers does not align with the Leica pronoucnement “..be one of the first to experience the next chapter in the history of profesional photography,…” Therefore, I think that the new Leica SL will enable movement of the sensor like the Contax AX of a bygone erra that would provide autofocus to manual focus lenses. Now, that would be beyond evolutionary into something that is revolutionary for the photo industry.

I'm not a lens engineer by any means, but I don't see how a moving sensor can focus an image using light rays from a helicoid lens with moving elements.  I'll be very happy if I can manually use my M and R lenses on this new camera, even with an adapter.

Well the rumors and speculation are certainly building to new heights. Who knows other than the 'nda'types? I don't, but if it's what is largely being shown or reported, then I hope that even if it's smaller than an SL that it somehow has the feel of the original SL series; robust, simple, functional, a confidence inspiring image tool.

Nikon and Canon are likely anxiously awaiting to see Leica's FF AF EVF answer for the market. Sony is at the fore, and it's adaptable mount is one of the bigger the reasons. So how will Leica, C and N compete if any EVF FF they have don't do the same? Look all over the web and it's 'Sony this and Sony that', part hype or not they've got the masses attention. I'm guessing that will fade once the others join in.

In the meantime, Leica seems in a hurry and there are likely more than a few reasons other than the obvious 100 Year celebration. I hope they produce a product that can be seen as a logical evolution of the AF they largely were responsible for in a FF body that is a useable camera. AF for me is just one feature, not the end all, a proper professional, durable, non-M camera that I can use simply is what I need and that reminds me of my 'flex'.

I just hope the AF motors on the new SL lenses are stronger than the current S lenses as mine included many have been sent back to Germany to have the AF mechanism repaired or replaced

(...) I want this event on 20th October to be positive, although the ideas being put forward on this forum beggar belief.

Am I alone?

I reply with a WKQ (well known quote):

"There's no use trying," she said; "one can't believe impossible things."

"I daresay you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."

(I haven't yet had  my breakfast.)

That is going to be one thick camera. A 50 mm lens will have a focus movement of about 1 cm, a 135 more than double that. It will make the body about 2 cm thicker than the M at least; and a sensor inside moving at Formula 1 speeds.

True for the thickness but an enlarged body to accomodate the movement of the sensor would be a trade off for smaller lenses which is a big gripe by many Sony A7RII users who find the Sony/Zeiss fast lenses do not balance too well with the small Sony A7RII body. The mass of a sensor is most likely not much more than a group of lens elements and the sensor could be moved by a helicoil just like in a lens, thus trading off increased lens size due to focus motors in the lenses into the body making for a more balanced package. And, trumping the balance benefit would be the ability to use legiondary Leica M lenses in an autofocus manner and turn the feature off when wanting to manual focus.

The problem with EVF cameras is resolution, latency, contrast and actuation of the shutter.

For me the real problem is the last one. More recent cameras have electronic shutter opening: the mechanical shutter is open and it remains so when the sensor starts the light collecting for the picture. After that, the mechanical shutter closes and the photo is in the oven. In the future we will see photo cameras with full electronic operation and mechanical shutters will be gone forever.

An interesting question is if this new system has leaf shutters or focal plane shutters (or both).

Maybe Pentax will develop a new system based on the K mount and 24x36mm format, to be presented soon.

Yes, Ricoh is working on a FF Pentax, that is no secret. They tacitly confirmed this on last year’s photokina and the new body – K9 or whatever it will be called – is going to be introduced in 2016. But that is not a new system, rather it is the Pentax K system introduced in the 1970s. This has always been a FF system. Even Pentax’ first attempt at a DSLR was FF but the project got cancelled and Pentax decided to start with APS-C instead.

‘Bygone era’ indeed. It won't come back.
