Jeff S Posted October 1, 2015 Share #1381 Posted October 1, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) ...............I will still need the SL to take care of my walk about lusts.............. Sure, no surprise back when you suggested the S would fully replace your M. But before jumping on the new camera, you might want to try the M240 again (or its successor), this time making sure that the RF and lenses are well calibrated. You're better than a TV series....only have to wait 3 months for each new season. Jeff

Jeff After experiencing the Leica S there is no way I could go back to the inferior Leica M (That will get them jumping in the breaches)Saying that depending on how long it will take for the SL to hit the streets I might take a look at the Q ............... Na I don't want to do that. What makes you think my rangefinder was out of whack????

helged Posted October 1, 2015 Share #1387 Posted October 1, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I guess there are more ideas to a new camera body or camera/lens system than engineers and others around. But there must be a process of narrowing of options based on technical feasibility, production cost, loyalty to existing customers, digging into groups of new customers, new bodies/systems from competitors, etc. And in all of the above, lots of trial and error, testing and re-testing. So when a new system is now rumoured, when was the prototype version(s) of the system available? Not to mention the planning of the new system? And those testing the system, when did they get beta-versions to play with for their tests? As far as I recall, Sean Reid stated somewhere that he was invited for a talk with Leica representatives 2 (I think) years before the announcement of the first M Monochrom. So perhaps the SL-system (or whatever) was more or less on the drawing table when the M240 was announced, with adjustments being made up to recently? I ask out of curiosity; launching new products in a highly technical and competitive niche must be both difficult and risky business. But also existential for the companies involved. I'd bet it's something like this... at least, as you say, at the "drawing table" stage... I'd consider reasonable that real development could have started around 6 months after m240 delivery... I think that if one joins the 20th October announcement event this could be a question to which they probably have not problem to answer truthfully... hoppyman Posted October 1, 2015 Share #1389 Posted October 1, 2015 I am very happy to accept firmware corrections as tools for the lens designer, so long as the collateral damage from those digital corrections is not nearly of the magnitude that is plainly obvious in the peripheral areas of the Q files. Jono makes a shrewd comment that the M 240 certainly makes digital corrections to help M lenses. I hope that such a level of firmware disturbance of the raw image is the ceiling of the SL Maestro. This seems an entirely logical position, IMHO, just as the realization that FWD (front wheel drive) is a poor bargain. Just check Jono's comment again there? He said that there is no distortion correction applied by the M (typ 240). Whereas we are all aware I think of the vignetting and corner discoloration correction applied by the firmware (as publicised ) in the M9 and presumably now the M. Lightroom and Photoshop of course may optionally apply distortion corrections. So far we only actually KNOW that there will be a new line called SL. Whenever it actually arrives and in what exact form, with what lens and adapter options, I think that the discussions will be ongoing for some time ;-)

You assume that designing each M is a finite process. Granted, getting an M camera to market is finite, but I sincerely doubt the design and development process is finite; at least in my experience of product development. There will be a three year time line, but I would expect that prototypes are continually in development - to see what is achievable, if nothing else. The potential options will then be narrowed down as the timeline progresses, and the best final configuration the settled about 18 months or so out - just in time for Jono. There will be a three year time line, but I would expect that prototypes are continually in development - to see what is achievable, if nothing else. When a new model is introduced the developers will already have a firm idea of what its successor will be like. Some details will have to be fleshed out and the actual development work needs to be done, but while customers get excited about the new model its mothers and fathers are busy conceiving the next one. Now in this case we are talking about the mysterious SL, i.e. something entirely new, not an M. There probably weren’t that many dependencies between M and SL development. hexx Posted October 1, 2015 Share #1392 Posted October 1, 2015 Yea I remember that too Jaap.......................My UK trip was for 17 days and although we had a fantastic time and got some amazing pictures lugging the S around everyday became a chore feel your pain, done Cinque Terre costal walk with tripod and on it Hasselblad 501 with digital back attached to it and 4 lenses in my backpack - oh and it was very hot too

There probably weren’t that many dependencies between M and SL development. Infact... my hipotesis was simply based on the timing of 240 intro and SL intro... no relation between the products... for a NEW camera, not an M "iteration" I ca assume that 2 years around from first Hardware developments (not simply "first drawing board" I mean) and release of the first working prototypes for betatesters (apart Dr. Kaufmann... ... I think that someone has camera in hands from... let'say June or so...) is a reasonable time for a not too big concern like Leica.
