I presume that the Apo-Vario-Elmarit-SL 90-280mm f/2.8-4 will be bigger and more expensive than the Vario-Elmar-R 105-280mm f/4.2 (1.95kg, €6,200 in 2006) since the former (i) is brighter (f/2.8-4 instead of f/4.2), (ii) has a larger focal range and (iii) is an apochromatic, hence better corrected lens.

APO and Elmarit in rumoured zoom designation will be no doubt be competitor of sorts to existing APO Elmarit R f4 280mm prime. Now, who is going to mass produce it, Leica or subcontractor like Kyocera?

Right question... if AF is in the lenses' barrels... by sure Leica factory does NOT master this kind of manufacturing for "mass production"  (I think the S lenses too are partially outsourced... but admit that have never followed the S forum to have more detailed info about the manufacturing of S lenses)

I presume you meant Apo-Telyt-R 280mm f/4 since there is no such thing as an Apo-Elmarit-R 280mm f/4. Still 1.875kg and €5,500, hence in the same league as Vario-Elmar-R 105-280mm f/4.2.

Thanks.

Just curious; do you use the Q EVF for MF of "people" photography as well? Is so, whats your experience? The reason I ask is that I use the external EVF on M for slow tripod work to have precise framing in order not to wast pixels, but for taking photos of people nothing beats the RF for me.

I have tried MF on the Q but obviously not with any lenses other than the built in. The MF works but is slower than using a rangefinder. I ended up using AF as it is very good for the purposes you describe if you set one focus point rather than any multi point mode. (This is the way I use a DSLR also). I would not trust any camera to select focus point except perhaps with sports.  BTW if I remember right, this is the way Thorsten Overgaard suggests using the Q also - autofocus one point.

Do not misunderstand. My M-P is my first choice but the Q is fun and a serious camera in its own right.

Jeff its heavy. It takes unbelievably fantastic pictures but its heavy. I now need something a wee bitty smaller with AF for walking around town...........

No kidding ( I should have added some rolling eyes).....why do you think I watched to see how long you'd take after dumping the M?...right on your typical 3 month journey!   :o

The more an more we read into the SL camera the more I want to know what about the new M!!!!

Part of the reason I came to Leica was to downsize on lenses and body. Lugging a Canon 5D around with Heavy primes or 24-70 and 70-200 was not fun for a hobby.

How do you infer from the focal lengths and apertures of the three first lenses in the SL line that the SL system will only work with the dedicated AF lenses and won't allow to adapt current M lenses, the flange-to-sensor distance being too big?

Because the SL had a larger flange-to-film distance, therefore a new, digital SL, with the same (retro) design as the original SL, may have a larger flange-to-sensor distance as well.

The only one, who knows that for shure, is leica. I personally hope the rumor is wrong, and the design may be just a shrinked SL.

We will see...

Don't read too much into the SL name.  Remember the original Visoflex?  It was a mirror box for LTM and later, M cameras.  The new Visoflex for the M(240) is electronic and has no mirror.  The only similarities are that they allow the user to look through the lens.

I hope the new camera doesn't follow the same trajectory - slow to market, offering less than the competition and while costing 50% more than the competition, sold at less half the cost of production.

Actually, I wouldn't mind if it sold at a loss provided is didn't bring the company down (the Veyron sold at below cost, apparently).

I imagine that (A) is very probable, thinking of Sony as the benchmark ; while (B ) is very uneven, considering how is composed (nowadays, not at "Ur-SL" times) the industrial cost of production : the real problem is that with current lifecycles for such products, return on development investments is the critical factor.

And... ;) I'd bet that it surely will offer something less than competition, in line with their "Das Wesentliche" principle... not a critical factor for its success imho (and for its capability to make fine pictures, of course)

I distinctly recall you biting my head off for saying just that not too long ago... ;)

Yea I remember that too Jaap.......................My UK trip was for 17 days and although we had a fantastic time and got some amazing pictures lugging the S around everyday became a chore :(

Well not quite.....................as long as my guy at the Leica store in KL holds to the original plan then I will have a new S-007 when I get home in 3 weeks time. That camera will take care of my IQ lusts...............I will still need the SL to take care of my walk about lusts...............if you know what I mean

By the way, this long zoom doesn't seem to enjoy optical stabilisation. So, sensor stabilisation for Leica SL or no stabilisation at all?

I think Leica generally abhors the long string of abbreviations trailing the names of other vendors’ lenses. Weather sealing of S lenses, for example, isn’t indicated either. So even when there was no indication of an optical stabiliser (or weather sealing, for that matter) we would be none the wiser. Hopefully everything will be revealed on 20 October.
