* Discussion: 10 things/questions about Q after using for few days *

1. I was using a possible 30MB/s or even less SD card (black one, got 3-4 years ago), feeling extremely LONG waiting to read/write images. Does a 60-90mb/s SD improve a lot for the read/write speed? or it's just Q memory logic circuit is very slow (to be improved by firmware update?) any1 who is using a better SD card can confirm it?

2. I got the hand grip, prefect fit and much better to hold camera/shoot. Finger rings out of stock lots of places in London, didn't check reddot yet

3. Image/Lens quality far beyond my expectation, still surprised me even after seeing all reviews and samples.

4. UV/B&B Filter/Protection Filter options? Does any1 know can we still place the lens hood after putting a filter (any other brand not the leica one, I am not sure if the leica one allows you to put the lens hood back tho)? Which filter to buy?

5. The app is well developed and easy to transfer pics from the Q to my iPhone.

6. Holster, never seen any1 actually wear it, I like the case but not sure the belt go around your shoulder.. any 3rd party one recommended?

7. Any lens clean kit/cloth doesn't damage the lens coating worth to buy? I never used any modern leica lens so have no clue if we need to special tool to clean the lens.

8. Battery, I am planning to buy from alibaba, seems they have LUMIX BLC12PP genuine/factory stock only cost 11 pounds. I had a look on amazon.co.uk or ebay.co.uk, non of them actually has genuine/original one but 3rd party replica

9. Any super good neck strip to buy? the one in the box is just too thin and not very comfortable.

10. Well done! Panasonic and Leica! Q is the real monster... want to see a M system has all the good features soon!

I have yet to pick up mine, so can't really help you on the rest. But yes you can fit a filter and the hood at the same time. I asked the same. :)

Go filterless...the hood will protect the lens. I have never used a UV filter on any of my Leica lenses and in 30 years I have yet to scratch a lens.

For the filter, I recommend the B+W XS-Pro MRC Nano. I sold all my Fuji gear for the Q and this filter works perfectly. Approx £30 on Amazon and fits in hood. If you scratch the lens then you cant simply replace the lens ;-)

I understand the B+W filters have better coatings than the Leica filter which is 3 times the cost!

On the subject of SD cards, any thing less than 95Mb/s (SanDisk Extreme Pro) runs like a dog.

Hope that helps.

Quite a bold statement given that Leica doesn't produce filters at all and sources them elsewhere. There aren't that many producers or coating types and we can pretty much assume that the filter isn't made by the Chinese company that relabels them for Hama, Mirum, Bestbuys and god knows who else

But yes, the price is tripple

What about the Kenko KEEZPROT49 Zéta Protector (W) Filter? Ist there a difference in quality to the B+W MRC Nano?

I have found that filters increase the chance of flair and never use them.  Similarly I don't walk around with a lens cap on the camera. A really nice strap is the woven silk one from artisan and artist  I think they have upgraded the O-ring on it, because it wasn't strong enough,  but they are comfortable and you can knot them and hang them on your wrist.  Also, for Leica users,  they are reassuringly expensive.

According to Red Dot Cameras, which is a Leica Premier dealership, it's "handbuilt in Germany".

Pete.

On my tour at Leica Park one week ago, Ursula (our docent) was adamant that final assembly of the Q and adjustment to specification were completed there in the same factory with the M and S. She also said the Q lens elements, like all M, S and T elements are produced and assembled there at Leica Park from blanks supplied by one German and two Japanese glass suppliers.

I was not able to directly observe assembly of anything other than a few lens groups. But I have no reason to question the information we were given that the Q, like the M, is produced in Wetzlar after some components are first constructed in Leica's Portugal plant.

Ok, my first post on the Leica Forum despite being a pro' user of Leicas for nearly 50 years. This is my first impressions of the Q, mine arrived late last week.

First, it's definitely a "keeper" as far as I'm concerned and it's a compliment rather than a replacement or substitute to my other digital M cameras, ( M240's and the MM ). The size is closer to the M7 and M6's that I also still own, and that's a good thing because I was fearing that the digital M series were getting a trifle "oversized" for me. Still ok, but they're a step up from the analogue M's that have served me so well throughout all the years....

With the Q the 28mm lens for me is the perfect choice, handling and layout is close to perfect too and although I find the lens a tad on the large size the balance in the hand is ok, not great, but ok......

The one big gripe I do have is one that hopefully can be addressed in a firmware update, ( soon please! ), and that concerns the EVF/LCD mode choices and auto switching between them.

I am, as I suspect many previous Leica M users are too, prone to use a viewfinder at least 90%or more of the time, the LCD being reserved for reviewing what's shot and even then quite infrequently, and with the M's and now the Q I normally have the LCD screen turned off. For me with the Q that's a problem, because when shooting in the EVF mode you have to review through the EVF, that's just dumb. Any review should be made on the LCD of any camera, but to do so with the Q you have to dive into the menus and make the EVF/LCD choice change. What's needed in my opinion is the choice / option to use the EVF to shoot but when you wish to review a push of the "play" button brings the images up for review on the LCD.

For me again the auto EVF-LCD setting doesn't work, there's nothing worse that shooting in a "street" or "documentary" situation, ( or as in my case at times on a movie set ), and having the camera LCD lighting up like a beacon every time you take your eye from the finder. That takes away the "stealth" of Leica shooting.

For some I concede that's all ok, but for me I would really like to have more EVF / LCD operational choices.

Meantime I am also considering getting an optical "clip-on" 28mm finder.......not that I don't love the EVF, maybe it's that I love an optical finder more in most situations.

But that's about all I can find to grumble about with the camera after this first week, if Leica can fix the EVF/LCD issue all would be more than good. This camera truly is a great addition to my Leica tools.

Go filterless...the hood will protect the lens. I have never used a UV filter on any of my Leica lenses and in 30 years I have yet to scratch a lens.

In addition to this I recently experienced severe loss of sharpness when UV (even PMC or MRC) filters were mounted in images with a bright sky on top.

I suppose reflections between UV filter and the front lens are due to this.

So I sold all my UV filters and keep hoods and caps on.

This can't be right.

The T lenses are made for Leica by a third party company in Japan. Leica wouldn't say who it was, but they're not made in Germany.

Well, I was surprised about the T lenses too, but she was quite clear. I have not used a T, but it must have AF, automatic everything to match the iPhone, no? That means that the lenses include mounts and electronics that are not developed and assembled at Wetzlar. Perhaps you are correct that pieces of the T system come from Japan, and Ursula is honest in saying that the elements of the T lenses are made at Leica Park.

If you have a T lens, what does the inscription on it say... "Made in ....."

The factory is only working one shift. Presuming that there are some bottlenecks in the internal supply chain at Leica, it would appear that Leica Park is operating at 50% to 40% of capacity. It is plausible, therefore, that Leica would eagerly apply its own internal resources to support its greatest strength = lenses.

From the Leica T brochure (check it yourself) about Leica T lenses - "Engineered and designed in Germany. Made in Japan."
