Hey Everyone,

The Q is on my WTB list. It will be my Leica gateway.

I don't shoot much but really enjoy my fixed lens X100s (but wish the construction and ergonomics are a bit better). The Q seems to be it.

Can't decide between putting down a deposit to be on a waiting list and leaving it to chance to pick one up on my travel.

When I bought my first Leica, my idea was, just one excellent lens with one excellent camera. This idea lasted a few weeks. In the meantime I have Leica lenses from 18 to 200mm and many of them in many different versions. I was trapped by the idea Leica stood for since 1930.

When the Sony RX 1 came, I thought, this would have been my camera had it been on the market before I bought my first Leica.

The Q may be an idea for the Leica future, but no sensible offer to those who come from the Leica past.

I know this only too well. When I bought my M240P I got it with the 35mm Summicron with the promise to myself that I would use this combination alone for a few months. Within weeks I had bought a 90 and a 50 Summilux.

The Summilux is stunning. Looking back, had I bought the Summilux first, I may well have kept to my original plan... After all, I had used both my Spotmatic F and later, my Nikon F2A, with their respective a 50 1.4's for years and learned more than I could have imagined, using what I had, rather than forever worrying that I had the wrong lens...

There are times when I miss those days. Last night was one of them.

My lux is currently fitted to my M-P and its staying that way for a while. I'm clearly in the mood to simplify.

I wasn't referring to anyone here...I meant in general the average camera buyer is used to zooms.

I'd second that.

I have been fiddling with cameras for some 30+ years and when I look back, I cannot remember using zooms differently than what IkarusJohn said: at either end. I did an EXIF analysis a few years ago (to try justify buying a new lens to my wife :)  ) and it basically proofed what I had been suspecting: I use zooms at either end, but hardly inbetween.

But that's just me... or us (I am looking at you, Ikarus  ;) )

My father in law is a zoomer. I have once given him an f1.8 portrait lens (that's what he shoots) and he has probably used that thing exactly once in an effort to show some "appreciation" for the gift. His zoom lens is the 18-200 kind and he thinks that fixed focal lenses are a stupid thing of the past like rotary dial phones.

+1 for the 50mm. Poverty forced me to use the 50mm for many years but in truth it was somewhat of a blessing. If the Q had a 50 instead of the 28 I'd have one now. One camera, one lens, freedom.

Mike.

Some of Leica's finest lenses are 'zooms'. Within their aperture ranges they out-perform Leica's prime lenses - and some are so sought after they command premium prices in excess of those when new.

dunk

Well only if you got in a time machine and went back to 1990...today those zooms are not better than modern lenses.

I own two of those famous zooms (the 35-70 f2.8 and 70-180 f2.8), and yes they are amazing, but don't compare to modern lenses designed a decade or so later.

I think this camera would be great for me. I am in the process of selling off some of my unused gear at the moment so I am not buying it now. My fav lens for my walks used to be a 50mm but I realized that I love the 28mm - 28/2.8 ASPH on M9 is great. I had a 35/2 ASPH but sold it recently since it stayed in my pelican case almost all the time.

I might buy the Q in the near future  :).

On the weekend I was shooting with the M9 + Voigtlander 35/1.2 and the Panasonic GM1 + 25/1.8.  Most of the shooting was with the M9 as I wanted to experience the 'M feel' with a camera that is closer in weight to the Q than a tiny m43 camera.

I rediscovered the 70cm focus limit of the M9, and found myself using the GM1 for close ups.  It reminded me of the utility of a camera that allows close focusing, which the Q has in spades.  Liveview shooting is also intrinsically move versatile than RF shooting, not to mention the ability to use autofocus.  The Q is very much on the shortlist, as long as I can get the colour to look the way I want.

I will buy the Q Vario (assuming there is one in a year or two).  I am a recreational (albeit pretentious) shooter, and I need some ability to photograph from the sidelines my daughters on a playing field.  Or capture a detailed shot of a panel from the ceiling of the Baptistery in Firenze,  Stuff like that.

Mate no point in getting your knickers in a twist over a comment about the Q or about an iPhone.

Yes I have a bunch of Leica gear, I also have a bunch of Nikon gear, and it appears I am going to have a bunch of Sony gear pretty soon too but that has nothing to do with whether its a good or bad picture, its got to do with I work hard I like new toys and the Sony a7r2 gets my juices flowing more that a Leica Q.................that's it nothing more.

I am also away to get a Apple watch.............they tell the time the same as a rolerflex or a timex.......its just a watch :) :)

Neil, if you buy an Apple watch, you'll need an iPhone to use it, as I recently discovered when I thought of getting one. Like you, I don't have an iPhone.....so no watch.

Regards,

Geoff

I put my name down for one today. I love to make closeup people shots but I'm slow at manual focusing and a shy shooter so this camera sounds just great as a compliment to my 50 Summilux asph on M-E.

Just wondering how well the rendering of the 28 will compliment the 50. Is the 28 made by Leica or Panasonic?

Definitely not for me. I cannot imagine living with a camera with a fixed lens and such a wide angle of view. I am sure it will appeal to those who like to take pictures on their phones because the angle of view is similar. It will be fine to email holiday snaps and family groups. Portraits, sports, macro? Forget it. Perspective distortion close up? No thanks.

The only interest for me is that it may point to a compact M mount camera.
