jbl Posted June 7, 2015 Share #1 Posted June 7, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, In the M60 thread, I mentioned that I was emailing with Luigi's daughter about making a special case and strap for the M60 since it has no lugs. A couple of people asked for details and I wanted to share them now that I've worked it all out. He doesn't have the camera, yet, so I sent him the dimensions of where to cut the leather for the ISO dial. I think this case will take a month to make since it's not something he stocks. Here's what I know: - He has two styles of half cases that have attached straps that fit the digital bodies. One is what he calls the "millennium style," the other is the "titanium style" (style done originally for the M9T). The main difference that I see between the cases to my eyes is the little straps on the millennium style that go up over where the strap lugs would normally be. I have that style case for my M3, but, to me, it doesn't make sense for a camera with no lugs, so I went with the titanium style. - If you want, he will leave the back solid or will do a cutout for the ISO dial. I went with the cutout. - The other thing is how you attach the case to the body. Since the camera has no lugs, you don't have the situation like with my M3 where the strap connects to the lugs and the case kind of wraps around that. In this case, the case has the straps, so the case has to attach to the body. I have a Leica 0 Series special edition (the one without Barnack's portrait). I did shoot with that camera at one point and Luigi had made a case/strap combo for me where the case has a tripod screw that attaches to the tripod socket on the camera body. It requires a key or a coin to screw in and out, but it's solid. The other option is the default one: it has what Ginevra calls "internal protrusions" which hold the camera in. I'm attaching a couple of photos she sent me of what those look like. I trust Luigi to make reliable holding mechanisms, but with a camera of this cost, I decided I'd go with the tripod screw so I never had to worry about it. The quick summary is this: Leica M60 half case with deluxe strap, titanium style, no grip. Aged rally. Red suede. Flush tripod screw, cutout for ISO dial and cut to accommodate a Thumbs-Up CSEP-1S. ~480 Euro. The "no grip" thing still has a little bump where your fingers rest at the front of the camera, it just doesn't have the extra hunk of wood or whatever he puts in there to make a larger grip. I hope this was helpful. I'm expecting the case in 3-4 weeks and very much looking forward to it. I'm also attaching photos from his website of the two styles of cases since his site can be a bit confusing. I've learned to navigate it over the years, but it can be a bit much. -jbl Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted June 7, 2015 Posted June 7, 2015 Hi jbl, Take a look here Luigi case for the M60. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Winedemonium Posted June 8, 2015 Share #2 Posted June 8, 2015 Thanks for going to the trouble of sharing all this detail jbl. When you look at the half case supplied with the M60, you can feel that it is reinforced. My concern with a third party case for the M60 is that without this reinforcing, a half case that also takes the load/torque of the straps might deform. A half case based on the M9 Titanium might just resolve this issue. I'll wait to hear how you get on with yours. Anyway, thanks for sharing this. jbl Posted June 8, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted June 8, 2015 You're welcome. I'll keep you posted. I'm not concerned about the strap connection to the case. Maybe I should be but I never really thought about it. He's been making this type of case for other bodies for a while and he does have a Noctilux/0.95 so I'm guessing he's thought of it. albertknappmd Posted June 8, 2015 Share #4 Posted June 8, 2015 Luigi is a true artist and takes great pleasure in coming up with practical yet innovative designs for camera cases. He has done this for me countless times for my R8 and R9s in the 1990-2000 era as well as for the S2 and S (typ 006) since that time. I have told him that his covers not only protect the cameras from unnecessary trauma and dings but at least on one occasion in 2011, the leather case prevented a major catastrophe in the Antarctic when my camera fell to the ground. It landed on ice and the fall was cushioned by the case. Most of all, I enjoy the interplay and camaraderie that he engenders as he solicits your advice when making the cases. He is atavistic to the extreme in this faceless, technical world we live in! Albert

jbl Posted June 22, 2015 Author Share #9 Posted June 22, 2015 As an update, Luigi has made the case, but we're still trying to make sure the ISO hole goes in the right place. By chance, does anyone here have one of these cameras and happen to be in Rome?

jbl Posted June 24, 2015 Author Share #11 Posted June 24, 2015 Me too. The case should be here tomorrow. Luigi hasn't put the hole in it yet, but I'll get the camera to make an imprint for the ISO dial, then send it back to him and he'll cut it. -jb

jbl Posted June 26, 2015 Author Share #14 Posted June 26, 2015 A folded piece of paper would have given him a pattern too. Less time less shipping. I went with what Luigi said to do. An update on the case, it came yesterday and is gorgeous, but the tripod screw wasn't in the right place because he didn't have the camera and was basing it on the M240 which is slightly thinner than the M60. He's making me a replacement which I should have next week so I'll keep you updated. -jbl

jbl Posted July 27, 2015 Author Share #18 Posted July 27, 2015 A month later and two return trips to Italy and I have a case! I received the second case, this time without the tripod screw, a couple of weeks ago. I had a few days to make an impression in the suede for the ISO dial, so I could get the case back to him for the one week he was back from holiday. He made the cutout and returned the case to me and it’s great. Exactly what I wanted. A couple of notes: I was a bit concerned about ditching the tripod screw in favor of the “protrusions” (his term), the little tab like things that sit above the camera and hold it into the case. After we couldn’t position the tripod screw properly, it was what he recommended and said that he’d developed it for the case he made for his on M9 Titanium and was confident it would work. So far it’s been great. There was a concern earlier in the thread about whether or not sewn on straps could hold the weight of the camera and lens. Having used it for a few days, I have no concerns. I’ve tried it with a f/0.95 Noctilux and I’m not worried at all about it being able to handle the load. The case with the camera reminds me more of the experience shooting with my M3 than anything ever has. The combination of the leather case and the lack of a screen and I just feel like I have my M3 again. It’s really great. Here are a couple of photos of it. I wanted to light the shots, but I just decided to shoot them with my Monochrom for expediency purposes, but I think they convey the general idea. I went with aged rally with red suede lining and white stitching. -jbl Welcome, dear visitor! Leica Foto Posted February 18, 2016 Share #19 Posted February 18, 2016 JBL Its been six months plus now with your M60 case and I am curious are you still pleased with it ? Also what color did you get Luigi to make it in ? I just got a M60 and am looking at all options. Regards Albert
Herr Barnack Posted February 18, 2016 Share #20 Posted February 18, 2016 I was a bit concerned about ditching the tripod screw in favor of the “protrusions” (his term), the little tab like things that sit above the camera and hold it into the case. So far it’s been great. I'm glad to hear that this design is working, but I must say that you are a much more brave man than I am in that regard. I would have an uneasy feeling that the dreadful Mr. Murphy would be forever lurking in the shadows, waiting for the perfect opportunity to wreak maximum havoc upon such a beautiful camera and its lens.
