Wrist straps

I have used home-made wrist straps from ¼ inch latigo leather strips on a succession of M and R cameras for many decades.   Latigo leather strips are cheap, strong, and seem to last forever.  They are usually sold in lengths about 7 or 8 feet.   Making a wrist strap takes less than an hour and uses about 3 feet of the latigo leather.   When making the wrist strap, I thread the leather strip though a split ring so it can be attached to the strap lug on the camera.  After adjusting the size of the wrist strap, the final step is to use very strong thread to tie everything together in 4 or 5 places.  Every couple of years it is wise to use a leather preservative such as Lexol to keep the leather soft and strong.

In some early production M240 cameras there were instances where the wrong screws were used to hold the strap lugs in place, and there were reports of some unfortunate incidents.   Assuming that has been completely remedied, is there any reason why a wrist strap cannot, or should not, be attached to the single strap lug near the shutter release of an M240 and a M246?

Personally I would not use a wrist strap on a current M camera. Perhaps my view is influenced by enjoying the added security of using a good neck strap over many years. I appreciate the extra security and aid to stable exposures. In contrast, wrist straps are my preference for my compact cameras which are lighter and less bulky.

Someone in the know told me that the lugs of the digital M's are not meant to be used with a wrist strap. When I use one with my M9, I always hold the camera in my hand. The strap is just for security reasons. Film M lugs were secured in a better way.

One lug can carry the weight of a camera at that angle, but any sudden jerk might pull the lug out of the body. Remember that you are speaking of about 1 kg (body + lens).

When using shoulder straps, the tension on the lugs is angled so that this can never happen.

I'm not a carry-in-the-hand type shooter, but if I were I think I would probably do as a few Leica-workshop leaders have suggested, which is to wrap the neckstrap around my wrist.  That way there are 2 attachment points incase one lug let's go.

I think the OP, having used home-made wrist straps... on a succession of M and R cameras for many decades... is specifically asking about the M240/M246 lug by the shutter release.

I don't have either camera so can't speak to that.

I use a Leicatime (Luigi) leather wrist strap most of the time with my M240 - it's coming up to 18 months old. I let it hang from my wrist (I don't swing it round and round!). I changed the original split ring for a better quality one, and I periodically check the lug for wear and movement. No problems so far. Nowhere have I seen Leica advise against wrist straps, so I assume they intend them to be used, and have designed the M for use with wrist straps. If I have a lug failure, I'll take it up with Leica.

I know the risks (listed above) but basically my camera is a tool for taking photographs, not a jewel to be protected.  If I feel uncomfortable carrying it a certain way (as I would with long neck strap leather wrapped round my wrist) then I won't do it. YMMV.

I had my Gordy strap with me on my M6 on a trip to China and it was perfect.  I had my M240 with me in Europe recently and had a neckstrap instead.  I missed the Gordy strap, because it secures the camera to your hand when you're lying in wait for a street scene to hit its decisive moment.  Wrapping the neckstrap around the wrist is awkward and ineffective.  I never dangle the camera from the Gordy strap.

I've been permanently using an Annie Barton Linky wrist strap with my M240 and Noctilux for over two years without a problem.

If the lug was to was to fail than I would expect Leica to repair it at their cost because the lug wouldn't have been fit for its purpose and there's no advisory not to use a wrist strap in the M240 manual or elsewhere that I'm aware of.

Pete.

Yes, security only.
