Geotagr App

Has anybody had any experience of the Apple App Geotagr ?

Briefly, it records where you've been and matches the data (via the time they where taken) to your images. Geotagged!

Works like a dream on my DLux 5 but on M240 nothing, I used the same procedure on both cameras.

Am I missing something or is there an incompatibility issue in the way the M240 records it's Exif date, ie Geotagr can't find where to put its data ?

Hope I've made myself clear

thanks for any help

Philip

Two things... It's not Apple who produced this App... and everyone who uses a smartphone with gps location can be traced by any security and emergency services anyway.

I had a tyre blow on my Audi the other day... Phoned the AA (automobile association, a roadside breakdown and recovery service), when I went to give the location I was told by the dispatcher exactly where I was... to within about ten yards/metres.

Whether you like it or not, you can be traced pretty much anywhere... and here in the UK it is almost impossible to walk through any major city without your entire route being filmed vis CCTV.

Frankly, I'm not in the least bothered. I stopped that paranoia dead when I first thought about it. Advantage or disadvantage? Do I care people knowing where I am?

Well, no one else cares either - not unless there is a reason, in which case everyone else should be bloody happy someone is keeping an eye on me, and, as you can't follow everyone, in reality, no one actually will.

On the other hand, if anything should happen to me, I CAN be 'followed' by anyone investigating after the fact, which, conversely, makes me feel more secure...

I am using Geotagr to record my photographic excursions. When I'm home I merge the data within Lightroom. As long as the clock of the cam and the clock in your phone are in sync it works perfectly well. Even when they are out of sync, you can easily adjust the offset within Lightroom.

You make some good points, but you can turn off the locating features on your smartphone and here in North America fortunately there are not cctv cameras like you have in the UK.

I just prefer to try and maintain as much of my privacy as possible, realizing that there are some trade offs for technology I want to use. So I am selective. If I was really worried about it I suppose I wouldn't be on this forum and would be living up in the mountains in a sod cabin.

It shouldn't be a problem since the Leica M 240 creates DNG files and I haven't noticed that the date doesn't work or read about any issues although I am not using any geotagging software so I haven't paid that much attention. Have you checked that the clock on the M matches the iPhone? Could there be some time zone problem?

Since Leica wrecked the GPS on the M240 by changing, during a firmware update, the delete last GPS position to a period of 5 minutes, which was shorter than the time normally required to acquire a GPS lock, I cannot imagine this app being of much use either. I find it staggeringly disappointing, that Leica in spite of a: being made aware of this idiocy over a year ago and b: agreeing that the change had been a mistake, at that time and that they would alter the delete period to either two or three hours in the next firmware update or a specific update, they have still not corrected this fault over a year on. I had a communication passed on to Jesko von Oyenhausen a few weeks ago by Leica Service, pointing out that a correction of this error was very overdue but have not as yet, had the courtesy of either an acknowledgment or a response. This is bad manners apart from bad customer relations. The MF grip is pretty much an expensive and heavy waste of space until this is corrected. I have ordered a Photoequip dumb grip to use in its place, as with my arthritic hands a grip is an essential and I don't want to carry around a heavy and bulky MF grip, which doesn't work.

That's Fair enough, sometimes I don't mind global corporations invading my privacy, other times I hate it. I can live with Apple but supermarkets watching with their loyalty cards, what I buy, when I buy it and when I get the next lot does my head in!

Even so, your phone service provider is able to determine where you are.

And CCTV cameras are indeed present in USA.

If you really care for your privacy, just live in a dark cave, without tech toys, mail, gas and electricity :p

You can still live in a cave and have electricity and other creature comforts.

I've been on to the developer of this app, very helpful guy I might add. He reckons that the GPS function on the M is switched on (which it is) despite not having or ever had had a multi-function grip(with GPS function) and its filling the exif file with dummy data and of course his app can't fill it in because it's already been filled. The GPS function is greyed out on my M so I can't switch it off. Can this be done without the multi function grip?

thanks

The Apple location apps are not foolproof. I have been in France for over a month now but my two Macs (Retina MBP and Mini) plus my iPad still think they are in the UK. I have tried everything to force them to update their map locations. Earlier this week I gave up and phoned Apple on my Applecare contract. To give them their due they tried very hard and I got phoned back a number of times by increasingly senior consultants. Still no luck with everything we tried, deleting all sorts of plist files, clearing caches etc. I have also reported the MAC physical locations of my modem routers to Skyhook.com, in the hope that might be the cause but still over 1,000 miles wrong. My two iPhones are correct but of course, they have GPS, as their prime location tool.

This is not correct. I have checked up on EXIF data on the M240 in three situations. 1) without the MF grip mounted. No GPS data dummy or otherwise is reported (field is blank) and no GPS time/date stamp either. 2) With MF Grip mounted GPS switched on and an active satellite lock GPS position reported  and a GPS GMT (UTC) time stamp. 3) MF Grip fitted GPS switched on but no satellite lock (sadly most of the time with current firmware), no GPS data reported in EXIF, i.e. field blank and no GPS date/time stamp either. See EXIF data from 2 and 3 below.

Are your location services turned on for both devices? Do you have any restrictions enabled?

Sorry, that guy told you nonsense.

The GPS function is greyed out because no GPS device is present in the M without the grip. Some manufacturers hide configuration items that are not applicable to the current hardware configuration, but this is science fiction for Leica firmware developers.

There is no easy way for a system without GPS and phone service to be geolocated.

Alternative ways to geolocate a system are based on nearby WiFi networks (but the system needs to "see" well-known WiFi networks), or Internet providers IP address ranges (but these are continuously reassigned).

It is therefore understandable that your Macs don't know where they are :)

What is less understandable, is that if you connect your iPhone/iPad to your Mac, the location info is not sent to the Mac. Blame Apple.

We have tried every conceivable variation of settings but my Macs and iPad are still convinced they are sitting in the UK. This appears to be a Yosemite and iOS 8.x "feature" as others have reported the same problem. It is probably something to do with Apple's MAC location database rather than my machines. Their senior advisors have booked another call with me this afternoon to discuss the situation further, now that I have posted MAC physical locations with Skyhook for over two days. Apple is in the process of moving from Skyhook to its own MAC location database and it may be caught up in this.

Who knows!

When I checked it using Preview (on Mac) the gps data fields were full of noughts ie. altitude 0 m LAT 0' 0' 0' N  etc etc. Baffling !
