Does your M grab people's attention?

I have also had pretty girls comment on my Leica in public.

People I am meeting in social situations do generally ask about it as well.

However funnily enough in the street its much more ignored then when I use other cameras. I think people assume its a film camera and for some odd reason people have no issue having their photo taken with film cameras. Odd but seems to be true ....

I get more people noticing when I carry my Canon 5Dmiii.  Think once with my M240 had someone remark liking old film cameras.  I just smiled.  My experience is only other camera buffs notice it's a special camera.  Most people could care less which is a good thing.  But when I shoot the Canon, if around tourists, they often want to see what I am taking a picture of and copy!  Cracks me up!

Are you sure it was the Leica they were ogling?

Grabbing attention? Not really! A couple of years ago, on holiday in Austria I met on the top of a mountain (reached by cable car!) a japans tourist with his wife, both were shooting a Nikon F6, I had my M7 and I and  guess we were the only three people shooting film in Austria! So we chatted a little and at the end they said "nice camera" ...with a nod in directions of my wife DSLR... :(

I had a security guard at a costume shop on Hollywood blvd explain to me how it was illegal in California for me to take pictures of people coming out of the store. That wasn't what I was doing, but that's beside the point. I wonder if I didn't have the M if he would still have told me all my actions were being recorded by police on cameras across the street.

What a load of crap.

The Bill of Rights applies even in California, despite the California politician's and rent-a-cop's hallucinations to the contrary.

I was standing on a street in Kyoto with my Monochrom when a foreigner walked by and asked me whether it was a digital Leica. When I said yes, he pretended to spit to the ground and said: "Leica M6 and M7 film cameras only since 1985" and walked away.

That just reinforces my supposition that there are idiots on every continent.  :)

Yesterday I had a Leica T-shirt on whilst taking a photo and an elderly German  gentleman walked up and asked whether that was my Leica I was using, as he had his own 1930-s one at home, used Leica all his life etc..

I was shooting an NEX 7 with Canon LTM 2.8/35 at the time... :o:ph34r:  I didn't know what to say and just mumbled I left my Leica Standard home today...

The oddest one was going through airport security at Schiphol. After having my M240 go through X-ray, the security guy asked me without looking at the camera inside the bag whether it was a Leica. When I said yes, his reply was that they always came up on his scans because they're made of so much brass.

  • 3 weeks later...

So I was out with my M7 and 2.8/50 Macro-Elmar 2 weeks ago at Bondi. Tourists everywhere including one with his immaculate silver M2 with DR 50 Summicron.  He spotted my M7 with 2.0/40 Summilux.

He looks surprised, smiles, shows me his camera and says 'M2, film, no light meter' clearly thinking mine was digital.

I smile and say 'M7, film, light meter'

He was on holidays from Singapore with his family and camera!

First time in ages I've seen someone else with a Leica.

In two weeks in England, I think I saw 2, maybe 3 Leicas. In Bath, I was approached by 2 Japanese gentlemen who were intrigued by my M. In a matter of minutes, I was swarmed by some 8 others who were fascinated with my Leica.

One woman wanted to lift the camera by the strap around my neck to see how heavy it was. We all agreed it was heavy. Other than that, I ran into a Nikon shooter at the Tower of London who commented " nice camera." Had to agree with him.

I get stopped far more often shooting on LeicaM240's than I ever did on Canon 1DX's - Clients look at the screen and say that they are soooo much better than anything shot on an DSLR, I modestly decline and suggest otherwise, but its coming to a point where I actively promote it. Shooting on a Leica   promotes a kind of aura (rightly or wrongly btw I accept that) and it gets me more work. In my view the images are better and I much prefer shooting on them. I've even been on eBay and bought a load of film for my aged M6's, my photography has been rejuvenated.
