Does your M grab people's attention?

So why not try a Leica on a tripod in the street and see if it changes the dynamics of what's going on? As a photographer stood there with a camera you're changing the dynamics of the situation anyway, so why wouldn't formal street portraiture work, or using slower shutter speeds to show the trails of people as they move through a city?

Exactly. There are no rules for using these things.

I wasn't trying to imply that using s tripod was somehow verboten. I just wanted to get an idea of how many people actually use an M in this way. It's been useful to see other people's ideas on this and examples which is why I asked.

I like to travel light but do needs stabilization occasionally, which is why I use a half leather cover and try and find a convenient wall or bench. The M240 has helped somewhat with its slightly enhanced weight, as larger lenses are more stable, although a prop under my biggest lenses is still required sometimes.

  • 9 months later...

Just revisiting this topic after what happened to me this afternoon. I was at Hinton Ampner House, a National Trust property. Friends and I were wandering around their beautiful gardens when a chap said, "Ah, a real camera." He had spotted my Leica M-P 240 and was interested to know if I enjoyed it. I said how great it is to have a manual focus camera of such quality build.

Turned out he and his wife are both professional photographers and he hates all the buttons on modern cameras ... and they are all so big. We had a lovely long chat and I think he is now in the market for a Leica M.

I handed the M-D to a friend the other day. "It's special... What's special about it?"

He puzzled over it for ten minutes, then his eyes shone: "There's no screen! There're no buttons! No autofocus! No menus! This is great! How did you find such a perfect digital camera?"

My sentiments exactly. :-)

I've had my black m240 about 6 months, and I carry it daily now.  I only ever had one single passing comment of 'nice camera' from one guy with a 1D and a 200mm f2 prime, who presumably knew what it was, but he didn't stop to chat.

Do many people use a tripod with their M series camera?

I do.  I would estimate at least 30% of my images are made with the MP on a tripod, I like the way it attracts people to come and stand next to me with their mobile phones. Really, I do.

So my answer to the OP is no, my camera does not grab people's attention.

The tripod does.

On Saturday morning whilst out with a photography group I'm a member of we stopped at a coffee shop after an hour or so and I put my M240 on the table. Suddenly this new member almost shouted in surprise "Oh my God a Leica! Who's Leica is that? Is that your Leica? I dream of owning a Leica one day!" to which the organiser of the group replied to her "Oh God. He's enough of a Leica fan boy already, he doesn't need any more stroking!"

Scene from Salzburg/ Austria: "Oh- you've got a Leica (MM)!" I replied: "Oh- you've got a Panerai!" Everybody reacts on things he / she is interested in: cars, watches, dogs...if you don't know Leica you don't react.

When i was in Damaskus i passed another Photographer also carrying a M. We both smiled at one the other and walked our way.

I was going through airport security a couple of years ago and they pulled me aside. Two guys were looking intently at the x-ray machine's screen. "Is this your bag?" they asked. "Can you open it?" They started looking through it and took out the camera. One of the guys said to the other, "See? I told you it was a Leica!"

Made the opposite experience at Munich airport, the x-ray guy looked at the screen and then asked "Can I have a look at your Leica?"

Once in an elevator in Dubai a local guy came in, looked at my M9 and said "What Canon is this?"

Feb this year at Fushimi Inari-taisha in Kyoto: a couple came my way, both with an M240 around their necks, guy in black, lady in silver, smiling at me (and my beat up M9)...
