daveleo Posted May 18, 2007 Share #1  Posted May 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) hello  i post very few messages here, but wanted to record this for reference.  i have a Digilux-2 (3 years old) that spends its life in a glass case or a very nice bag when being used. i have been very cautious with it, as it is the most expensive camera i own.  well, i went on vacation last week and (due to my clumsiness) it fell off my shoulder onto a *solid concrete* floor. it landed on the rear right hand corner (above the on-off switch) and it got dented. i thought for sure it was ruined. (20 years ago i dropped a SLR camera off a bed onto a *carpeted* floor and it never worked again !! ).  i am most happy to report that, despite the dent, the D2 works just fine.  i am also very relieved that i can take it out and use it and stop worrying about hurting it..... and have decide NOT to repair the dent and leave it as a battle scar reminder that this camera was built to be used, not kept in a glass case.  regards,  daveleo

rivi1969 Posted May 18, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted May 18, 2007 Daveleo; Â Â I am sorry that happen, but I am happy it's still up and running... Â You just opened my eyes, I have one in pristine condition but because I almost never use trying to make it last forever, like if it was a fine jewerly... I wonder how many pictures I missed having it well packed in the closet. Once my Luigi's case arrives this week I will use it regularly without hesitation, as you said, those battle scars are only proof of the many moments that for sure your camera has capture! dugby Posted May 18, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted May 18, 2007 Dave, sorry to hear of the dent. Â I used to think similarly when I bought expensive items. Â But the reality is .... in 5 years time, we will all look at our D2's and think .....it was a great camera for it's time, but today in 2012......it's a relic of a past era.............that digital for you. (Analogue is so different, so from the 1970's carefully looking after an M3 etc was quite important if you wanted to be using it in 2000) Â Use the D2 and enjoy...... because you will buy a D3 or D4 or D5 sometime in the future because of your past great experience with the D2. ho_co Posted May 18, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted May 18, 2007 Dave-- The first dent is the hardest, but the Digilux 2 is solid indeed. Â I once fell onto hard caked mud, the camera coming down right beside me. I was surprised to see that it still worked fine. Â Then six months later, not watching where I was going, I fell onto concrete when stepping off a curb (kerb), and again the camera joined me on the road surface. I was even more amazed that the camera was still working. Â It's pretty badly scratched up now, but still works great. Â Just be glad you dropped the camera instead of falling with it! Concrete hurts! Â --HC
elansprint72 Posted May 18, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted May 18, 2007 Good to hear about the D2 solidity (sorry to hear about the accidents though). Makes me wonder how a camera like my V-Lux 1 would fare in a similar fall; it appears to be made entirely of some sort of black resin, which I suspect would chip or crack rather than dent. My D2 has managed to stay pretty good looking, wife dropped it on the floor once, just a tiny mark.
Stephen.gray90@ntlworld.c Posted May 20, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted May 20, 2007 The D2 is indeed a sturdy well built camera, mine has had several "drops" and a major fall down some steel steps of about 5 metres! apart from several chips in the body the camera still works as well as the day I bought it. But this being the first time on this forum I have become alarmed by the number of D2 users who have experienced total sensor faliure on the D2, This is the first I have heard of this what seems to be a common fault on the Digilux and I would be very grateful if anyone could tell me on what sort of average age this fault seems to appear, and how long are Leica extending the warranty for?
