Even if the company would be able to survive without the M, which I believe they could if they had to, it would be a sad day indeed, it would not be easy.

The M is the flagship product and symbol of Leica and as such cannot be missed, if only for the corporate image.

So no worries there ;)

My post was in response to those predicting the succumbing of the M under an onslaught of mirrorless cameras and East Asian clones followd by te collapse of the company, which imo is a rather unrealistic scenario to put it mildly....

My point is that there have been people saying "If there were a cheaper alternative, buyers would desert Leica in droves" I try to point out that they didn't in the past and are unlikely to do so now. They only thing in the past that really hit Leica or rather the whole German camera industry was the advent of the Japanese SLR and Leica managed to survive that.

As for S and R, the R series has been a money pit all along and the S is making Leica money, so I think it was not a bad decision to drop the R. Especially as the DSLR market appears to be a shrinking one nowadays.

The question is not whether the S makes money, it is whether a R10 with a proper set of auto focus lenses could compete in the market and make more money than the S.

The problem with the R series was lack of features compared to Nikon Canon. I thought they were wonderful cameras and had six all at one time. I really did not care about auto focus, but now I realize pros do because their work is different than mine.

Unfortunately we will never know for sure. Perhaps the M is my answer.

  • 2 weeks later...

So, having sent a few emails to the address noted on Leica's news item reference the sensor corrosion issue, I have had no response what so ever. I guess they are being inundated?

Using my camera professionally, I'd like to get discussions with Leica rolling ASAP (so that any corrective repairs can be carried out before the main season kicks in).

Is there any other email address I could be using other than the Customer.Care@leica-camera.com they have requested we use?

Hi all,

Just a note/update on my personal experience with the sensor issue.

I sent my Leica m9 black body on Jan, 12 2015 to Camera Clinic Melbourne and had, within 3 days, a response from the technician that my camera was eligible for sensor replacement. They didn't confirm me whether the sensor was coming form Australia or Germany, but it was replaced and the camera was ready for pick up on Jan, 29. An amazing service, incredibly quick. I guess a good ending example to give some hope to those needing this issue solved.

All the best!

Gio

I put my MM into Leica Ginza (Tokyo) and was quoted two weeks for the replacement sensor. Well, they didn't manage it in two weeks... I just picked it up, all done and dusted, after just 1 week. Fabulous service!

Leica in Wetzlar should take a few lessons from Leica Ginza about this. They have had my Monochrom since the first week of November and I am still only tentatively promised a new sensor later this month. I have been told "hopefully".

Apparently they simply have replacement sensors in stock... I was really worried when I first heard the normal waiting times. I highly recommend a two-week holiday in Japan... although you will need to bring an alternative camera!

I mailed two M9's in a few days ahead of my appointment to Leica NJ. I have received zero updates in over a week. I have called once, only to go to voicemail and am trying to be polite and patient in awaiting an email reply.

As much as I love the M9, I would prefer they tell me what the upgrade costs will be for the M240. I guess the offer varies on a case by case basis. The closest dealer to me is five hours away, so it was out of the question to work with them on this sensor corrosion issue.

I want to rave about excellent customer service, but unfortunately this is a rant.

Which is undoubtedly supplied the same way as Leica Wetzlar. There might have been a slight imbalance due to variations in demand, but basically stockis are spread out over the various overseas representatives.

I wish I could just take my M9 to my local dealer for verification of corrosion and a trade-in deal. I've been waiting a week for a response from Leica regarding when and where to send the camera, and I'm hearing stories of people being without their camera for 3 months or longer.

I'm glad Leica is making this right, but the process seems like it is going to be very long and painful.

It is no use sending the camera in for evaluation just now, Leica still has to work through a waiting list; if you get in line and ask for notification when you can send it in you will be without your camera for far shorter. In the meanwhile just enjoy the camera ( and a spot of postprocessing )(pun intended)..:p

I booked mine in in December, and was then asked by Wetzlar last week to send it either to them, or to the local distributor. It's on its way, but to be honest I have no expectations as to when it will be dealt with. If you consider the number of M9s, M-Es and Monochroms sold, this is an open ended hole that Leica is standing over. Some patience is in order, I'd say. They have said they'll fix the problem, and I believe we can trust that assurance.

This issue has dented people's confidence in the CCD sensor based cameras (it has dented mine), but the reality is as Jaap says - you can keep using your camera, and in most cases a bit of post-processing will fix the problem. When it gets too much, Leica has said they will fix it, or give you a deal on an upgrade, and I think you can rely on that. I don't think rushing to get your camera assessed will really achieve anything other than increasing your stress.

Cheers

John
