microview Posted April 25, 2015 Share #41 Posted April 25, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Having installed LR6 and had a look at it, I can't find any difference at all from LR5. +1 I 'developed' a DNG in LR5 and LR6 and if you check you have the same plus/minus values for highlights, shadows, black, white, etc, I thought the resulting tiffs were indistinguishable. Geolux Posted April 25, 2015 Share #45 Posted April 25, 2015 Hello: I have downloaded Lightroom 6 and used if for several days. So far, I really can't see any benefit or advantage over version 5.7. I regret not paying attention to my initial reaction to the news of the availability of version 6: "Version 5.7 works perfectly for me and gives me everything I want - why mess with success?" Alas --- I didn't listen to my better judgment. Live and learn ... . Geolux

I regret not paying attention to my initial reaction to the news of the availability of version 6: "Version 5.7 works perfectly for me and gives me everything I want - why mess with success?" Could be, but you might want to read my second link above provided by Victoria B (The "Lightroom Queen")….she provides a lot of not so obvious changes that might improve the overall operation even if one doesn't use the obvious new features like panorama, etc. Julieanne Kost videos (1st link) are always useful…see 'hidden gems'. Alas --- I didn't listen to my better judgment. Live and learn ... . Geolux Having read this and everyone else's comments I think I will just stick with 5.7 which I am perfectly satisfied with. I particularly didn't like the idea of Adobe spying per Andy's comments although I make a point of being disconnected from the internet unless I have to specifically download something. Apple is bad for spying as well - my wife discovered that iPhones will track and record your location and keep a list unless you specifically disable this function and it's buried in several layers of menus. Having grown up in the 60s and 70s I am uncomfortable with this kind of intrusion into privacy.
Jeff S Posted April 25, 2015 Share #48 Posted April 25, 2015 +1 I 'developed' a DNG in LR5 and LR6 and if you check you have the same plus/minus values for highlights, shadows, black, white, etc, I thought the resulting tiffs were indistinguishable. That shouldn't come as any big surprise (before any additional edits). There have only been 3 LR process versions (development 'engines'): 2003 (LR 1 and 2); 2010 (LR3); and 2012 (LR 4, 5 and 6). But as always, there have been other changes and improvements, which may or may not have resulted in better files (and user experience), depending on user needs, techniques and abilities. One could have said the same about going from LR 4 to LR 5 (same process engine), and I for one am glad for having made that switch, and I presume I'll be similarly pleased over time as I become familiar with and exploit the potential of LR 6 (which is sure to have multiple iterations…6.2, 6.3, etc….over time). YMMV. Jeff
Delcredere Posted April 26, 2015 Share #49 Posted April 26, 2015 I have read that LR 6 imports images much more rapidly than LR 5.7. Is this the experience of Furum members?
Luke_Miller Posted April 26, 2015 Share #50 Posted April 26, 2015 I find LR 6 to be noticeably (but not dramatically) faster than 5.7 on my machine. But I have a pretty fast machine and thought LR 5 was fast enough until I picked up 24 and 36 megapixel bodies. So I do appreciate the performance increase. As far as new features go - I don't do panos or HDR so I won't be using those functions, but the new ability to edit the gradient filter with a brush is very useful to me. microview Posted April 27, 2015 Share #52 Posted April 27, 2015 I can't even find any additional functions... Just imported DNGs from card and LR6 then ejected reader from Mac desktop. Does that count?
rob_w Posted April 30, 2015 Share #53 Posted April 30, 2015 I asked the question about using my spare TAN for LR6 in another thread. It seems more likely it is answered here, where several members are in the process of redeeming TANs for LR6 rather than LR5. I will monitor their experience and probably go the same route. Thank you to the pioneers -- particularly as it does not seem self-evident on the part of either Adobe or Leica. Adobe do seem to be getting rather difficult to deal with though. We are in to diminishing returns: most of what they have added in the last few major releases is stuff I do not need. Yet I need to stay current for the little bits I do need. They are making it clear to everyone that they will not support the software unless they are getting income for it. Not a great way to maintain customer loyalty. jip Posted April 30, 2015 Share #54 Posted April 30, 2015 So has anyone redeemed LR6 with a unused TAN yet? I have a few M240 TAN's I haven't used yet.

indergaard Posted May 4, 2015 Share #57 Posted May 4, 2015 LR6, for me, feels very "flakey" and... light, in a way. As if the image is rendered separately from the UI (which it is). Whereas LR5 feels overall very solid. For some reason, exporting files in LR6 is noticeably slower for me than in LR5. Importing files is quicker though. Maybe it's my GPU. I'm using a laptop with a Nvidia Quadro K2000M 2GB GPU with the latest drivers, as well as 32GB RAM, 1,5TB SSD and Core i7 2.8GHz quad-core cpu. So even though it is a laptop, the specs should be good enough to run LR6 just fine. When exporting images my mousepointer freezes up even, as the exporting process taxes the system completely and makes the entire computer slow and extremely sluggish/unresponsive. jrp Posted May 4, 2015 Share #58 Posted May 4, 2015 The main new features in LR 6 / CC don't really work with digital Leicas as they seem to rely on getting the right Exif data, which is not possible as the Leicas only estimate the aperture (even if you have a 6-bit coded lens). This makes the HDR feature unusable, for example.
rob_w Posted May 8, 2015 Share #59 Posted May 8, 2015 So, has anyone redeemed a TAN code and received LR6? The posts seem to have died away without confirming one way or the other. Thanks.
SiriusLux Posted May 8, 2015 Share #60 Posted May 8, 2015 In the German forum they posted a link to an article where the German magazine ct' has performed some benchmark tests with LR6 in comparison to LR5. http://www.heise.de/foto/artikel/Nachgemessen-GPU-Beschleunigung-in-Lightroom-6-und-Lightroom-CC-2626770.html The result is pretty nasty, i.e. LR6 is notably slower in comparison to LR5, even as bad as half speed, they could not find any positive effect from using the GPU. Subsequently they enquired directly with Adobe who in the meantime replied. There the result is basically that only the use of the sliders in the Develop menu takes real advantage of a fast GPU. For me that's utterly useless, and it if is true that the HDR function is useless for our Leica M(even the 240), then the only advantage would be that there is a panorama function in LR. My question: Does this work? I guess instead of updating immediately - what I wanted to do - I will wait some time.
