So, as you may know, my M9 went to Leica for sensor replacement almost 2 months ago. Pictures taken at f16 were showing huge amount of black dots many of them with white halos. by judging the pictures, Leica deduced that the camera's sensor could be affected by corrosion and asked me to ship the camera to them. weeks ago, I got an email from Leica telling me that my M9 is shipping back to me. I couldn't pick it up until early this week though. The camera's button plate lock was changed as it was loose and sensor was cleaned not replaced as it seems spots seen on it were dust not corrosion  Now, the camera feels like new again, sensor has 0 dust at f16 and I'm so happy having it back as I've been missing it a great deal.

Didn't had the chance to shoot with it yet "raining non stops here"  but couldn't resist this scene at our kitchen yesterday upon lunch time. This is fresh mediterranean tomatoes and cucumbers. anyone ?

Very nice ! You are a lucky M9 owner.

Unfortunately, my M9P went just for a routine health check- and I thought I only had dust- but Leica Switzerland has diagnosed corrosion.

So, I will have to replace my beloved M9P with a M-P, on a fair trade basis. This said , I have to inject new funds to get the M-P at a moment I thought I have all I needed and take a break from new spending. So it goes, as an escape forward, and I hope my pictures will be worth it.

This said, I am looking forward to get my brand new black M-P new week .... positive thinking !!!

I will take some fresh cucumbers with a bit of olive oil and Feta cheese please...

That's sad and a good thing at once. Sad because your M9 is gone but good because you're getting the brand new MP. I'll be waiting for you to tell us how the upgrade is gonna impact your photography and wether you'll miss the M9 style :-)

Keep me posted.

They give you no choice in this matter?

They give you no choice in this matter?

Well, nearly not. But if the choice is to use the guarantee and have the same problem later ? It looks like as of today there is no proven cure for the problem.

How much you need to add to get the M-P?

I understand that Leica offers the sensor replacement or upgrade also to the M9 out of warranty, and this is really great, but not really in agreement that they force you to move to the M-P (regardless if you like or not).

Massimo

I had the choice between both options but the replacement was not "recommended". So, technically one has only one option. Turning in back the M9P, the new M-P was proposed just below half of list price.

My M9 went to Leica after check up (aperture 16 sky shot) by the Scandinavian rep. as they suspected sensor corrosion. However this was not the case, but the sensor had a number of dead pixels. The suggestion from Leica was a re-mapping. For this they will charge approx. 150 EUR, while cleaning and control of the camera and sensor will be free of charge. Does this make sense?

Although I didn't want to spend the money, this is precisely the reason I did the upgrade. That said, I'm finding that the M-P is a far more useful camera for me because of its high ISO performance, EVF, larger screen, etc.

I wonder if the M9 sensor problem only affects later production runs of the M9. I have one of the first M9s and, knock on wood, so far no issues other than a "dead pixel" line at one point. Is there anybody who had one of the early M9s that had the sensor corrsion?

i think mine is from early production, serial #3810xxx... it went in for a check up; replaced the circuit board and sensor at LeicaNJ as part of the goodwill program.

I have an MM.  As far as I can tell it has no sensor corrosion but will have to go to N.J. for another issue.  I'll ask them to inspect the sensor as well, it has a few dust specs but other than that seems fine.  I would be dismayed if I had to give up this camera, as I am not a big fan of a  CMOS sensor on a Leica.  It seems that it's only a matter of time before I have a sensor corrosion issue.  Am I correct in this assesment?
