LUF Admin Posted April 9, 2015 Share #1 Posted April 9, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica's move to Wetzlar is one year ago - now it's the Leica Forum's turn. On Friday / Saturday (April 10th/11th) the Leica Forum is moving to a new server and a new software. Here are the most important things to know! The New Leica Forum - Modern, Faster, BiggerThanks a lot for your great feedback from the survey we conducted last week. We received more than 2,000 answers!Reading your feedback and your suggestions was so interesting - a lot of new ideas and acknowledgment that we are on the right way.We are pretty excited, on Friday the Third Big Leica Forum Move will start. Tension is rising and our checklists are growing. Here is our plan:Our PlanOn Friday morning (European time) we'll close the forum for about 15 minutes and save all data.Afterwards you can continue with forum discussions - but:All Posts, images and registrations during this period (Friday / Saturday) won't be transferred to the new forum. In the meantime I'll straighten up the data, copy it to the new server and start the migration process. In case everything runs well (two test runs already did) the new server will need about 24 hours to import all data. Afer some post-treatment I hope to re-open the new forum on Saturday afternoon (Saturday morning in the US).What you can expectI'm going to explain the advantages and new features of the new software over the next weeks, here is a little preview:Bigger images, better presentation - Pixel size and file size will be increasedto allow better image presentation. Better post editor - This will make it simpler and more intuitiveto write new posts.Better overview - I have changed the forum structure a littel bit - now everything is visible at a glance.Alway up-to-date - The new forum has great features to get your personal tailored news.Integrated classifieds - The Leica Forum Buy & Sell section won't need an own log in any more. Everything is integrated into the forum. In general the new forum will be much more modern - features as well as design and the technical foundation. Some things will be goneSome data will be sorted out during the move:About 100,000 spammers, duplicate accounts und inactive members Attachments from discussions, which weren't active for more than two years What do you have to doUntil we turn the big switch: NothingWe'll transfer for you your accounts with all data, posts, messages, likes and attachments (if not too old) - you don't have to care at all. Only one thing - get a paper and write down your username and password in order to make the new log in easy. When you log in the first time to the new Leica Forum, not everything will run smoothly and a lot of feattures unfamiliar. In this case we ask for: Patience. Some glitches will be fixed directly, some issues might take longer. Please try out all new features - I'm pretty your that everything will work well pretty soon.Ah, one moren thing you can do on Friday / Saturday:Keep your fingers crossed RegardsAdmin Andreas

LUF Admin Posted April 9, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted April 9, 2015 will the forum continue to work with Tapatalk? Yes. Will work with Tapatalk too. Perhaps not during the first days but will be available. Andreas

jamesk8752 Posted April 9, 2015 Share #8 Posted April 9, 2015 I'm a little concerned that dropping attachments from inactive posts over two years old will result in the loss of images essential to the topic under discussion. Would it be possible to retain these for a longer period of time? We often see old but interesting threads resurrected and I'd hate to lose the valuable info they contain. Regards, Jim
LUF Admin Posted April 9, 2015 Author Share #9 Posted April 9, 2015 I understand this issue and I take this serious. The decision was not easy but to take all attachments over would have extended the migration to 5 days - if everything runs OK... I'll keep the old forum as read-only archive thus all images will still be accessible. In important cases I'll try to move the images manually. mirekti Posted April 9, 2015 Share #10 Posted April 9, 2015 The decision was not easy but to take all attachments over would have extended the migration to 5 days - if everything runs OK... As if the Leica people never used to be on the waiting list in the past, and we are talking about months, not days. Nobody would die if the forum is down for a week as long as there is an information available it would be up once migrated. Not sure using the archive will be convenient. Andreas I don't know if it would fall foul of the two year rule but I think a good example of an important case is Mark Norton's M8 anatomy thread. Also, there are threads on rangefinder adjustment with instructional images that would be a shame to lose.
andybarton Posted April 9, 2015 Share #12 Posted April 9, 2015 Suggestion... If any member knows of a discussion that is over two years old, and has attachments (such as Mark's M8 thread), bump it so that it becomes "active" again. Just post the word "active" If Andreas sees this as a problem, I am sure that he will delete this post! There won't be too many very old inactive threads. I am looking forward to the all-new, singing and dancing forum
stunsworth Posted April 9, 2015 Share #13 Posted April 9, 2015 Nobody would die if the forum is down for a week as long as there is an information available it would be up once migrated Andreas would loose a week's worth of advertising revenue. I've no idea how much that would be, but I can understand why he's reluctant to lose it. Plus any missing photos would still be available in the read only archive of the current forum. Great idea. You have 11 hours to go Move will start tomorrow morning VERY early... Andreas
LUF Admin Posted April 9, 2015 Author Share #15 Posted April 9, 2015 Andreas would loose a week's worth of advertising revenue. I've no idea how much that would be, but I can understand why he's reluctant to lose it. That's one point - another one is: I would have to sit night and day beside the computer, check the proceedings, push it forward from time to time. And start all over if something crashes Andreas
farnz Posted April 9, 2015 Share #16 Posted April 9, 2015 … In case everything runs well (two test runs already did) the new server will need about 24 hours to import all data. Afer some post-treatment I hope to re-open the new forum on Saturday afternoon (Saturday morning in the US). …. Hi Andreas, How will we know when the new forum has re-opened - will an email be sent to let us know? In the (hopefully unlikely!) event that the move does not go to plan will we be kept informed via email or is there somewhere else we should look to find information about progress? Can we safely assume that the new forum will be at the same web address? Thanks, Pete.
LUF Admin Posted April 9, 2015 Author Share #17 Posted April 9, 2015 Good question, Pete! When the new forum is ready and I'll open it under a subdomain (something like newforum.l-camera-forum.com) and direct the whole traffic to http://www.l-camera-forum.com there. Then I'll transfer the domain to the new server and switch everything back to the original domain. Sounds complicated but I have a good plan Andreas
LUF Admin Posted April 9, 2015 Author Share #18 Posted April 9, 2015 I have just checked and modified my script which deletes the old attachments. Now it will also keep attachments in threads with more than 5,000 views. So all threads will stay complete that ever had a little bit popularity... This takes me two more hours during the weekend but I think this is a good investment. Andreas

If any member knows of a discussion that is over two years old, and has attachments (such as Mark's M8 thread), bump it so that it becomes "active" again. ... Hi, Andreas, As the 'caretaker' of the Barnack's Monthly threads I decided to follow Andy's suggestion with older Barnack's Monthly threads but they were closed at the time to discourage posts after the end of each month so I'm not able to add a new post to make them active again. Is there some way I can do this please? Pete.
