Tom Barry Posted March 29, 2015 Share #1  Posted March 29, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Cedar waxwings use our tall, just-budding pecan tree for a flock resting place (and place to poop all over the white stone walkway under the tree) each spring. They stay near the top of the tree, so I can't get close enough for individual portraits even with the FZ1000 lens at 800mm equiv. So I concentrate on the group dynamic:  Welcome, dear visitor! stuny Posted March 29, 2015 Share #2 Â Posted March 29, 2015 Terrific, and among my favorite birds ever since I was a small boy.
fotografr Posted March 29, 2015 Share #3 Â Posted March 29, 2015 What an incredible sight. I've never seen them in concentrations like this. I generally see a few in one of my favorite local trout fishing spots, but to see them in numbers like you have is truly amazing. My favorite of the group is the fourth image due mainly to the nice light.
Northwest Wanderer Posted March 29, 2015 Share #4 Â Posted March 29, 2015 Brent said it all. Amazing to see so many at one time. Nice photo work.
Tom Barry Posted March 29, 2015 Author Share #5 Â Posted March 29, 2015 Thanks for the kind words. The waxwings in a group behave as one organism, especially when they are (easily) startled. The entire flock departs within an instant. I'm hoping to capture one of these panic-flights soon.
platypus Posted March 30, 2015 Share #6 Â Posted March 30, 2015 Really terrific shots of great looking little birds!! We have no such breed of bird here in Oz. One of the things I enjoy most about this Forum are the beautiful and always interesting photos posted of birds and animals that are native to other countries....these photos are a perfect example of that and they are a pleasure to look at. It is close enough to make a great composition and I like the warm colors. Â Paul

Bill W Posted March 30, 2015 Share #9 Â Posted March 30, 2015 I especially like 3 and 5 which show several birds in flight with their wings silhouetted.
