thomaswchapaman Posted May 10, 2015 Share #141 Posted May 10, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks, I think your are right; it's a fair assumption to say the lens and hood design are unchanged other than paint vs black chrome, so it seems using filters will require ingenuity. I looked at some of my existing 43mm B+W filters ; they have the newer cost reduced flat metal retaining rings, rather than the older threaded and keyed style, so I suspect glass removal is going to be tricky :-( To get the filter glass out of an un keyed B+W you need to turn the ring anti clockwise with a rubber bung. A special set of bungs can be purchased from a company called Micro tools I think they are based in Germany. It is possible to improvise with an eraser. I hope this helps. Advertisement Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 Hi thomaswchapaman, Take a look here NEW: 35 cron and 50 lux available in BLACK CHROME. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Simon Bee Posted May 10, 2015 Share #142 Posted May 10, 2015 Hi Simon, Congrats on your new lens. May I ask if the focus tab is made of plastic or metal? Thank you! It 'feels' like metal to me and it has the same black-chrome finish of the barrel. Kind regards, simon
smkoush Posted May 10, 2015 Share #143 Posted May 10, 2015 It's interesting how different we all are...I don't use hoods, so I got this one because of the form factor, it is very noticeably smaller than the stock version. A 43mm B+W is perfectly fine up front. If I need something else, I may even screw a 43->46 step-up ring, and that can act as a hood.
wattsy Posted May 11, 2015 Share #144 Posted May 11, 2015 Congrats on your new lens. May I ask if the focus tab is made of plastic or metal? Thank you! If you are asking about the 35 focus tab, it is made from plastic.
wattsy Posted May 11, 2015 Share #145 Posted May 11, 2015 It 'feels' like metal to me and it has the same black-chrome finish of the barrel. Touch it with the tip of your tongue or your lip – it isn't cold like the rest of the lens barrel and is presumably plastic.
tuck.kenney Posted May 11, 2015 Share #146 Posted May 11, 2015 Touch it with the tip of your tongue or your lip – it isn't cold like the rest of the lens barrel and is presumably plastic. Good way to test it! Thx!

Good method. I can tell it's plastic even touth with fingers.

algrove Posted May 12, 2015 Share #150 Posted May 12, 2015 Well a plastic focusing knob does not impress me. Now I must go around and either lick or melt each lens I have to determine plastic or metal.
calfunk Posted May 13, 2015 Share #151 Posted May 13, 2015 Got my 35mm today. The red and white on the barrel does remind me of Voightlander's new lens but definitely not the built. It's very solid. I've never had another 35mm ASPH to compare it with but it feels quite heavy, heavier than the 50mm f1.4 V2. I'll have to see how the photos quality are compared to the 8-element before I decide if I should keep it. But it does look great on a black M240P : )
wattsy Posted May 13, 2015 Share #152 Posted May 13, 2015 This is my fourth 35 Summicron ASPH. I previously had the black paint version which I liked very much and rather stupidly sold when the FLE Summilux became available. I was looking to buy another 35 Summicron this year and had been mulling over the options of buying either a used black paint or a silver chrome version of the lens (there is something – no doubt irrational – that I like about the balance of the brass bodied versions of this lens) so the release of the black chrome edition was timely for me. I don't care at all for the round hood (which I am familiar with from the black paint edition I owned) and the supplied metal lens cap is absurdly thick and heavy for the purpose it is meant to serve (both items have gone back in the box and will remain there) but the lens itself is, as anticipated, beautifully engineered and very smooth. horosu Posted May 14, 2015 Share #153 Posted May 14, 2015 It is also lighter (remember, no hood attached), it weights 0.85 lbs, while the silver chrome version is just over 1.02 lbs (so about 18% lighter without the hood). It weighs a ton... 467g with shade and lite cap, as you would have it in your bag. There seems to be a considerable difference regarding the weight of the lens in these two posts. I'm very interested in this lens, however the weight puts me off. May I ask: how much does it really weigh without the shade? 385 or 485 gr? Many thanks

I'm very interested in this lens, however the weight puts me off. May I ask: how much does it really weigh without the shade? 385 or 485 gr? Many thanks Since I use lens shades, I weighed the black chrom lens complete (rear cap, shade and front cap, just as it would be in my bag). The shade is mostly metal, so I would not be surprised if the combined weight of the three extra pieces = 93 grams. FWIW, my 50 SX focuses quite close and with good quality too. The 50 SX focuses ~25mm closer than my APO 50. Image quality is really exceptional. Either my 2004 50 SX was a relatively poor sample, or Leica has changed something(s) in the lens. My new black chrom one is not only very beautiful to look at, but its center sharpness and micro contrast are not that far off of the APO 50.

smkoush Posted May 14, 2015 Share #156 Posted May 14, 2015 Can you please confirm that the black chrome Lux WITHOUT shade weighs 385 gr? Thank you Yes, that is correct. The 50mm black chrome Summilux without the hood and rear cap weighs 386 grams.
horosu Posted May 15, 2015 Share #157 Posted May 15, 2015 Thank you. That is good to know. I do not use a shade and have been somewhat put off by heavier lenses. 385 gr seems to be just manageable.

Even if it is a few grams heavy, just think of how beautiful the rendering will be!

I find it very well balanced on an MP, weight is not a concern in my opinion.
algrove Posted May 15, 2015 Share #160 Posted May 15, 2015 wattsy If you would indulge me, do you find any issues with the plastic thumb tab? I don't know where I have been, but did not realize plastic thumb tabs were part of the Leica culture.
