peterjcb Posted March 7, 2015 Share #1 Â Posted March 7, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been researching wide angle lenses and two have caught my eye the LEICA 21mm F/4 Super Angulon and the Voigtlander 15mm F4.5 ASPH.... I am using an M8 presently but there is the possibility of an M9 one day in the distant future. I'm also open to other suggestions for a wide angle...I presently own a 50mm Cron-M and a 28mm Elmarit ASPH so the longest I'd go would be possibly the 21 Super Angulon. Â Forget the 15mm. Go straight to the 12mm Voightlander. Cannot help with the Super-Angulon because I've never had one. .
Gary Clennan Posted March 7, 2015 Share #3 Â Posted March 7, 2015 The CV15 is terrible on the M8/M9 & M240. The slight corner smearing is the main issue but the color cast on the edges can be troublesome and time consuming to correct. The CV12 is much better in this regards. Also - the (soon to come) CV15 updated version may also be much better....

Well that's not true at all. The CV 15mm f4.5 is an excellent lens on the M8. Here are some Flickr shots just to illustrate the lens on the M8. No colour corrections or corner problems. https://www.flickr.com/photos/128029366@N05/ Dave S

The best in terms of optics and flexibility is the WATE. The 16-18-21mm Leica. It suits digital well and will even work perfectly on a Sony A7r without smearing or colour changes. Problem is, it's expensive.
iwc852 Posted March 7, 2015 Share #6 Â Posted March 7, 2015 ... the Zeiss Distagon ZM 18 F4 is excellent and works on M8 as well as M9. Not available new anymore but certainly used. No compromise on any front....
Ronazle Posted March 7, 2015 Share #7 Â Posted March 7, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) My first choice would be the 18mm Zeiss Distagon which will work well with either the M8 or M9. My first choice for the M8 only would be the 21mm Zeiss Biogon which requires corner fix to become fully usable with the M9. I have both and use the 18mm quite a bit. I also have the Voigtlander 15mm which is a great buy, but have not been using it much. The 12mm Voigtlander may well be a great buy also. Â The 21mm 2.8 Zeiss Biogon T (unlike the 4.5 Biogon that is a true wideangle, the Biogon T is retrofocus and much larger) may very well be the best choice, but I have never used it and doubt if it could be better than the 18mm Distagon. Â What a shame the 18mm Distagon is discontinued!! Regards, Ron
peterjcb Posted March 8, 2015 Author Share #8 Â Posted March 8, 2015 ...going through some Flickr shots this evening....the Voitlander 15mm really nice and is very reasonably priced but the CZ 18mm Distagon is reallly outstanding
RobertJRB Posted March 8, 2015 Share #9 Â Posted March 8, 2015 I have used the 21/4 SA on the M8 and M9. On the M9 the edges of the frame had a lot of color cast. On the M8 it was a lot beter. Â My pick for a wide angle on a budget would be a used ZM 21/2.8 or 18/4 depanding on which focal length you like. Â If there is budget it would be the leica 21/3.4 or 18/3.8. lct Posted March 8, 2015 Share #10 Â Posted March 8, 2015 According to the M8 manual, exposure metering is not possible with the Super-Angulon 21/4. The tiny CV 21/4 does not have this problem and is superior to the S-A in all counts but distortion so there is no objective reasons to prefer the Leica lens IMHO. I also know why some are in B&W - primarily due to the nasty color cast. Yes, the CV15 can work but only when corners are not important and you are ok to spend some time in post correcting color cast.

Yes, the CV15 can work but only when corners are not important and you are ok to spend some time in post correcting color cast. Â No colour casts whatsoever. Corners are good and sharp. I've checked all my past images using the CV 15 images with both my M8's; all DNG and JPG's OOC show zero colour cast in the corners. No colour or corner corrections on any Flickr images. Â I understand this lens does cast colours on FF; but have not tried myself. Â Gary, have you actually tried the CV 15mm f4.5, on the M8? Â cheers Dave S Â Well I went into LR to look for sample images with the M8/CV15 to show you and couldn't find any with color cast. I have used the CV15 on a few different bodies and got confused (which isn't difficult). It did work quite well on the M8 but I was thinking of the M240 which was very bad performance. My apologies for the confusion....
Peter H Posted March 11, 2015 Share #14 Â Posted March 11, 2015 I used the CV15 on my M and M9 and found the colour cast frequently unpleasant and tricky to remove, sometimes impossible without other undesirable side-effects. Â In my experience the CV12 is the far superior lens for use with a full-frame camera. I have not tried them on an M8 though.. Â I have kept the 12 and sold the 15.
