Seforeman Posted February 19, 2015 Share #1 Posted February 19, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all. I just received my used M8 I purchased from B&H Photo. The camera appears in very good shape, however I am not sure if I need an adapter ring or something else. I have a Leitz / Summicron 1:2 50 mm (circa 1964) Lens attached, and it will not focus back beyond 12 feet (3.5m)? It seems the inner focus ring that mounts up against the body rotates against the "wheel" inside and stops. Is this normal? Do I need an adapter ring to push this out? Any help would be appreciated. This does not happen with the 35 mm 1:2.8 Leitz / Summaron (also circa 1964-69). Nor does it happen with my 90 mm 1:4 Leitz / Elmar . Looking for advise.. I guess I just want to make sure the camera is working as expected? Thanks in advance. Stuart

Seforeman Posted February 19, 2015 Author Share #2 Posted February 19, 2015 I think I found my answer on Ken Rockwell's site. He mentions this vintage lens (for M9) cannot be focused beyond 4 Meters. Has anyone else seen this problem - is there an adapter ring that would move the lens out a 1/4" or so? Thanks Stuart
jaapv Posted February 19, 2015 Share #3 Posted February 19, 2015 Moving the lens out would only increase your problems.
lct Posted February 19, 2015 Share #4 Posted February 19, 2015 According to the user's manual (p. 86) the "Summicron 50mm f/2 with close focusing (...) cannot be used" on the M8. I have no experience with this lens but you may wish to have a look at this thread from 2006: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/7165-m8-dual-range-summicron.html. Seforeman Posted February 19, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted February 19, 2015 Thanks for the link, the lens does work, just cannot focus all the way down. Will wait till I have enough cash to replace with an alternate 50mm. Thanks again Stu
jaapv Posted February 20, 2015 Share #6 Posted February 20, 2015 Actually you might make some money by selling a dual-range Summicron and buying a standard Summicron 50 of a similar vintage. Another option is to have the shroud removed.

Seforeman Posted March 4, 2015 Author Share #8 Posted March 4, 2015 I have confirmed my lens is a dual range. I have fallen in love with the M8, using it with my 35 and 90 mm lenses. I decided not to damage or sell the 50 dual range ( I will still use it with my M4), I purchased a Jupiter 3 1.2 / 50mm. It's amazing lens and I really love the pictures it takes with the M8. I am enjoying the information I am finding on this forum. Thanks a bunch Stu
