M8 in the rain

Well its raining out, more than a drizzle but not pelting down. I feel like going out to do some photography and normally I wouldn't think twice about doing this with my Canon 1dsII and a weather sealed 24-105 or one of my other canon weather sealed "L" lenses. But I don't want to. I want to go out and use the M8.

I remember Mark Norton commenting that when he took his M8 apart he thought it was tightly put together in an environmental integrity sense and the M8 seems to have withstood the Namibian sands.

Anybody have any useful rain experience with the M8?

Hi eric,

M8 + Rain? simply a killer solution!

for my little experience,it's simply great. What about hiding the camera in your jacket? 35mm summicron asph or a 40mm summicron-c in your pocket.... and great architecture pictures while people run away to repair from water...

astonishing... especially with b/w...

I will put some pictures with these killer-combo on my website: MAURIZIO BEUCCI.com - Official web site

maybe you'll know what i mean...

Eric, I've taken the same M8 I dismantled out into the pouring rain and it's been fine. Yesterday, my enthusiasm for taking pictures ran out long before the camera's...

I try to keep any drips away from the shutter release collar which is the weak spot but since the water is not being forced in under pressure, I think the rest of the camera will be fine.

If it does malfunction, switch it off and remove the battery and leave it that way until it's been in a warm dry environment for 12 hours. I just put mine on the Aga to be sure...

I've used mine many times while being caught out in inclement weather. I do try to protect it as much as possible and todate have had no problems, I would not make a deliberate decision to go shooting in the rain, however I'm in no way suggesting the camera is suitable to withstand water ingress to the same degree as the 1D series and weather sealed lenses but perhaps I've just been lucky. Expensive mistake to make should something go wrong!.

I just had a problem in the rain. I stupidly followed a friend out onto the beach at Manzanita in Oregon to photograph him making a fire in the rain (he wanted roasted hot dogs and was determined not to let a little rain stop him). After about 10 minutes, the back display quit. I quickly returned inside, and as Mark said above, removed the battery and took everything apart. 12 hours later it was fine, but still quite nerve wracking.

By the way, the rest of the camera functioned fine, just the back buttons stopped working.

Anyway, I wouldn't recommend TOO much rain, it will get you. The was one of those special Northwest Drizzles. Seemingly light, but coming from all sides...

Standard mid-european summer rain - no problem with some care (taking it out for the shots, cover it with the jacket when not in use). The surface was wet, full of raindrops - no trouble. This is MY experience, no recommendation to use the M8 under water ;)

My wife will love this. "Honey, we need to buy an Aga so I have a place to safely dry my M8. What color would you like?"

Aga offers a nice magenta colour...

Thanks everybody, v. useful. I'm going out with the Leica.

I keep the camera and soft cloth in my bag when I'm walking in any case. The rest of your comments are useful. Thanks Mark for the added advice. I'm off... :)

I have used my 1Ds II (and the 1Ds before that) in extreme humidity (monsoon rain in Malaysia) and extreme cold (minus 20 C in the norwegian mountains) - which is also condition at which you struggle with both frost & humidity, - but I would never carry my M8 into that kind of an environment! - Not without a certain amount of nervousness, though. The 1Ds II (and sisters) is about the best you can get regarding weatherproof camera. With all respect, but M8 is far from weather proof.

- Even though we have a 60 years old original swedish firewood AGA at our summer house in Sweden - not one of these gas-run replicas that the nuveu rich in Britain are using. I would be careful with using it to dry just any camera in it, though. But after a few hours of burning it has dried absolutely everything in house, from hunting dogs to cameras.
