Dear Friends,

I want to ask about Leica M8 Variants.

I found a seller that is selling Leica M8 in Chrome Color that the "M8" logo in front of camera is not Black-Paintted as usual I see on M8.

Can this is be explained as an original M8 variants from Leica? or there's not?

Thank you and best regards

I've never heard of this but i may be wrong. I suspect your dealer did like me (pic). A drop of acetone and you're done. Welcome to the forum BTW :).

Dear all,

Oh, so when I can take a conclusion, the "M" logo without black-painted for M8 silver-chrome is not originally from Leica factory, but the user itself that erase (maybe with Aceton and so on...) so the black-painted M logo disappear and become chrome/silver like top plate body paint.

Am I do the right conslusion ?

Thanks

Yes, as you conclude.

Same with the black Leica dot (lct camera pic above), with the sole exception of the black version of the M8.2, which came standard with the black logo (the chrome M8.2 came with traditional red logo). If you see otherwise, it's the work of the owner. Leica will, however, add script to the top plate and certain other customizations….but they don't mess with their logos unless it's a specific model design.

Thank you Jeff, you make me sure about my question above.

additional question, sorry if differ from subject above.

I have an offer from friend about M8 silver-chrome, but the package just : camera body, body cap, strap, battery, and charger. Without box, papers and so on...

The cosmetics of body is truly very mint (99,9% like a new one), the function is 100% works well. How much the appropriate/good pricing for this offer?

Thank you.

Hi liemjerry

Main thing to look for is microscratches on LCD. Hold to reflect light to see a hopefully perfect surface. Make sure the viewfinder is totally clear of dust. Check the sensor by photographing the sky at f22, and carefully check image on computer, zoom in and change contrast.

The boxes are just junk to store. Manual on the web.

I suggest a glass screen protector immediately. The LCD screen is about as soft as sunglass plastic lenses, and marks very easily.

For a truly perfect M8, I'd pay highly...they are just so rare. I'd be willing to go $2,300 for a truly excellent perfect M8. The price above though is a good guide too.

Good luck, I've just bought another M8...silver to counter my black chrome...it arrived 2 weeks ago :):):D

cheers Dave S :)

How good of a friend? :)

More seriously, I only buy from reputable dealers with some form of warranty. The issue is less the cost than having them formally test the gear and stand by any issues. Beyond that, I carry personal insurance for anything the warranty doesn't cover. I like to keep my friends. ;)

But if you decide to proceed, check local prices, as they vary by location, and have the friend make an offer. I'd ask why he/she didn't keep any packaging or, more importantly, service records. Personally, I prefer the M8.2, which includes sapphire screen, quieter shutter (but max 1/4000 speed) and 2m frame lines. Some M8s have been upgraded to include one, two or all 3 features (the M8.2 has a couple of other differences). Be sure to compare apples to apples when you compare prices.

For the next level of stealth, are there any M8 top plates out there without the M8 engraved into the front? Maybe even one without the recess for the red dot? A plain silver camera version (see M9-P, M-P, Monochrom) would be nice addition to the stable.
