Another Marin County artist in her studio. M10-R, 50mm Summilux. An aside: Her studio would be ideal for a portrait photographer—there are rows of windows on two sides that let in soft, natural light. There was no need for flash or any other artificial lighting.

I borrowed a friend's Noctilux 50mm f/1.2 to take some portraits and help me decide if I want to buy one.

This was shot wide open. Does definitely have a soft look all over—maybe that's the look of the lens, although it also might be that I slightly missed focus, or maybe it's both. I found the lens not easy to focus, even though I was using focus peaking and a Visoflex. Maybe using the rangefinder works better—I'll try that, too.

It is slightly soft allover, which is not unftattering to the subject. I have the Noct f1.0 and softness is a character of it, but centre image is sharp enough. Fall off to the edges, especially vignetting, is the signature of a Noct, excluding the lastest iteration. For colour work, a Noct has a definitive warmness to it and the overall painterly effect is what many aficionados buy the lens for. Focussing is slow because of the long throw and you should not rush it because you will probably muck it. Patience and deliberation is the requirement.

Good luck with your deliberations.

Another portrait of Kirstin shot with the reissued Noctilux f/1.2 wide open on an M10 Monochrom. Slightly soft all over.

Delightful.

The softness is a virtue and very pleasant, as is the subject. Well orchestrated.
