Advertisement Posted May 12, 2007 Posted May 12, 2007 Hi robojock, Take a look here lens hood on 28mm asph. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted May 12, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 12, 2007 anybody else not get a lens hood with their 28mm elmarit asph? should i push solms to cough one up? AFAIK it is sold with the hood and a special cap with the latter. What kind of lens cap did you get?
Shootist Posted May 12, 2007 Share #3 Posted May 12, 2007 I got a real, old style, metal, black finish, lens cap with the word Leica on it, a rear cap, and the clip on hood and cap for the hood. And of course the leather case. If you didn't get the hood and hood cap something stinks.
lct Posted May 12, 2007 Share #4 Posted May 12, 2007 ...If you didn't get the hood and hood cap something stinks. Agreed. BTW the hood of the Summicron 35/2 IV can fit as well.
Guest guy_mancuso Posted May 12, 2007 Share #5 Posted May 12, 2007 It may not be Solms that is the issue but where you bought it. Some dealers strip apart accessories in the box. now i never heard this of leica dealers but it runs rampant in the industry from let's say fly by night places. gerasdoc Posted May 12, 2007 Share #6 Posted May 12, 2007 You have every right to have the hood that is supposed to come with the lens. Having said that, the hood that comes with the 28 cron asph is big and cumbersome. There have been a few threads about replacing the factory hood with ohers that are smaller and sleeker. One hood that works well is the Contax Metal Hood GG-1. It's a 46mm screw on hood. I have one and I use it exclusively for my 28 cron.
lct Posted May 12, 2007 Share #7 Posted May 12, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Screw in hoods may damage filter threads of lenses in case of bump or drop. I prefer the hood of the 35/1.4 asph for the 28/2 personally.
scott kirkpatrick Posted May 12, 2007 Share #8 Posted May 12, 2007 He's asking about the 28/2.8 Elmarit, which comes with the new sort of tucked-in soft plastic hood, an easy-to-lose hood cover and a lens cap, and don't forget the Echt Leder case. I believe Leica ships all that in a black and silver box to the country distributor which passes it along to the dealer. If a lens sold as new arrives without all that stuff and its paper work, I'd suspect the dealer is up to something. Responsible dealers take money off if they have to resell a used lens without its proper box and case and paperwork, although you have to wonder what all that has to do with taking pictures. scott
Shootist Posted May 12, 2007 Share #9 Posted May 12, 2007 Agreed.BTW the hood of the Summicron 35/2 IV can fit as well. Actually the hood is the same for both the 35/2 ASPH and the 28/2.8 ASPH. I have both lenses and they use the same hood.
robojock Posted May 13, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted May 13, 2007 the dealer was a uk main dealer and the lens has the uk paper work and leather case etc, came with an old style metal cap. I am waiting for the dealer to get a reply from solms, i just wondered if it may be worth asking directly
scott kirkpatrick Posted May 13, 2007 Share #11 Posted May 13, 2007 It never hurts to write to info@leica-camera.de and see if there is some reason for the fact that your lens hood did not get to you with the lens. But this is still strange. The lens and hood and hood cover fit nicely into the leather case. Without the hood, everything would be loose, and I don't see how the product would be shipped.. I still wonder about the dealer's role in this. Perhaps your lens was a demonstrator and while it was on display its hood migrated to another lens. scott

Not sure why the need for all the conspiracy theories. Obviously, it is a simple mistake - either at Solms, Milton Keynes or at the dealers. I'm sure the dealer or Leica UK will sort the situation out for you by sending a replacement hood and cover set (part number 12526).
farnz Posted May 13, 2007 Share #13 Posted May 13, 2007 The hood for my 28 Elmarit asph came tucked into a special aperture in the foam rubber filling in the same nappa leather case as the lens itself. The hood is plastic with a detachable rectangular rubber front cover. Pete.
newyorkone Posted May 13, 2007 Share #14 Posted May 13, 2007 anybody else not get a lens hood with their 28mm elmarit asph? should i push solms to cough one up? What color is the box? The most current box is silver and black and before that, white. Are you sure that you bought a current version of the lens and not a vintage used lens? wattsy Posted May 13, 2007 Share #15 Posted May 13, 2007 Are you sure that you bought a current version of the lens and not a vintage used lens? The 28 ASPH Elmarit is Leica's most recently introduced lens and has only been available since late last year.
Iron Flatline Posted May 13, 2007 Share #16 Posted May 13, 2007 It should come with a hood. Chances are someone forgot to include it. The part probably has a 2 Euro value to Leica, so I assume they have no beef getting you one. Ask your dealer, he'll get it to you.
ericperlberg Posted May 14, 2007 Share #17 Posted May 14, 2007 Yes the same thing happened to me. I got the lens from The Classic Camera when I got my M8. It was close to 5pm so no attempt was made to check the boxes because, hey, its closing time and we have our priorities. So when I got home and discovered there was no lens hood included, I wasn't a happy puppy, could imagine the scenario when I had to tell them and then of course had to return to the shop to clear it up. I was very suspicious of how this could happen and suspected The Classic Camera of having demo'd the lens and forgotten to put the hood back in. But of course THEY suspected ME of trying to rip them off for a second lens hood. "This has NEVER happened before" they said. They looked at me (I'm not looking like their normal tweed and cordoroy customer), examined the lens, examined my paperwork and somewhat suspiciously asked if I had "checked" carefully. I then questioned whether they had forgotten to put the lens hood back in the box. Now that we were in a mutually suspicious mode (gee, I've only spent £15,000 in their shop over the last 6 years, like I'd rip them off for a bloody lens hood!) they said, well, if we don't have a lens hood for the 28 2.8 we'll give you one for the 30 f/2 and they did. We also coppied the Solms 'checked by name' and said they'd report it to Leica. Never heard anything further till your post. V, strange
wattsy Posted May 14, 2007 Share #18 Posted May 14, 2007 But of course THEY suspected ME of trying to rip them off for a second lens hood. "This has NEVER happened before" they said. They looked at me (I'm not looking like their normal tweed and cordoroy customer), London's favourite Leica dealer. I long ago decided that the only time I'll buy anything from Classic Camera is if they are the only dealer in the UK with something in stock. Even then, I'll consider buying abroad if I'm not in any great hurry.

Even then, I'll consider buying abroad if I'm not in any great hurry. Sadly I agree. I didn't even mention two other wierd things they did over my M8 purchase that were unprofessional although not intentionally mean. They're just horribly amateur at what they do. And then there's their broken web site they continue to use year after year without bothering to fix it... Oh dear...
