Macro-Elmar collapsing question

DigitalHeMan

Recommended Posts

Simon thanks for this info .... but I don't like EVF or Liveview :)

I also saw that the magnification ratio is not the same, so I keep the old lens

with my 2 analog M camera

Yes, the new macro adapter is only useful if you have the M240. So for the rest of us we can take advantage of the lower second hand prices on the old ME90 kit :)

The 90mm Elmar-M is indeed a nice lens. And I think DigitalHeMan is right. The new version of the Elmar-M can be fixed in the collapsed position. This is because with the new designated extension ring it can be focused to infinity when the extension ring is used and the lens is collapsed.

Kind regards

Andreas

When in the collapsed position the lens barrel does not lock as when extended but it should not extend on it's own when the camera and lens are pointed down. It is too loose and could be fixed if it is bothering you.

I am holding my M 90 ..... and if I hold it upside down it slowly extends due to gravity.

It has been exactly the same from new when I bought it a couple of years ago.

It is entirely dependent on weight ...... and without the hood and lens cap it hardly moves. I use a collapsible rubber hood instead of that infernal metal contraption which is possibly slightly heavier.

The effect is slightly dampened when on the camera ..... or with the rear cap on due to the vacuum effect .... but it is a product characteristic and not a fault.

No doubt you could get someone to put a wodge of thicker grease in the mechanism to lessen the effect...... or leave off the hood etc if it annoys you ....

Mine doesn't move with filter, rubber hood and hood cap on.

Lucky you !

Try using it more ;)

I have 3 collapsible 50/2.8 lenses .... all exhibit varying degrees of fit with regard to how easily they telescope in and out and how 'wobbly' the retractible part is when not locked .... so one always retracts in an M without problems .... and the other 2 sometimes touch the camera sides and care is needed.

Just a product of lenses assembled by humans rather than by robots. Reassuring in some ways ...... slightly irritating in others. With regard to the Macro 90 I doubt if Leica has a normal/abnormal point on this and would just adjust dependent on user preference ....

The coded 50/2.8 Elmar bought ex-demo in 2007, would fall out from the collapsed position, when held face down. It also had next to non-existent aperture detents and even wobbled a bit when locked. After a few weeks I took it back to the dealer and sold it. My older 3.5/50 Elmars (1931 and 1939) and f2/50 Summitar (1953) feel like precision damped hydraulic cylinders when you extend or collapse them. Not sure whether the sloppy modern feel is due to inferior manufacturing tolerances or a design change.

None of my samples do that. The Elmar family must know that i love them i guess. ;)

I had used Elmars and other collapsible Leica lenses, since I was old enough to hold a camera in the early 1950's, so the shoddily made 2007 model Elmar came as a shock to me too.
