wlaidlaw Posted July 16, 2024 Share #31 Posted July 16, 2024 The glued on Red Dot on my 80-200 Vario-Elmar R was knocked off last week. Considering it landed on a predominantly dark red Persian carpet, I was very lucky to find it. I will re-attach it with Loctite 401 industrial cyanoacrylate adhesive once a new bottle arrives, as the 20 year old bottle has gone rock hard. I use a pair of Swedish Fly tying micro pliers, with very fine angled tips to the jaws, so that I can get the dot in exactly the correct place and I wear a watchmakers magnifying illuminated headset. If a previously glued Red Dot has come off, remember to scrape the old glue off both the dot and lens. I use a Swann-Morton scalpel, with a fresh blade. To avoid making a mess, I think it is best to put the glue on the dot and maybe dab any excess away with a folded paper towel. Someone many years ago, gave me a bag of around 8 or 10 spare Red Dots. I think it was the late Peter Grisaffi. A more than lifetime's supply. It is rather nice on the Funleader 45mm lens that arrived today which BTW is beautifully made and about the same weight as my 50 Summilux III, so obviously very little plastic content and the optical cell looks brand new, that they have marked the mounting orientation with a very Leica-ish red dot. A tiny drop for a red dot might be quite safe though. Pete.
wlaidlaw Posted July 16, 2024 Share #35 Posted July 16, 2024 Pete, I last glued the red dot on that lens when it came back from Will van Manen, with no fogging, some 10 years ago, and I bumped it against a window frame last week, right on the dot. I don't think the tiny amount of glue I use on the outside of the lens will be a big risk. I thought the only fumes that could damage glass were fluorine or hydrofluoric acid but I believe it is the coating that is damaged. In the 13 year old thread that discussed this, someone was gluing something on the lens hood, right in front of the lens. In theory I should use Loctite 408 low bloom/low fume glue but it is expensive, sets rather brittle and contains Hydroquinone to which I am allergic, from years of being careless with darkroom chemicals, not wearing gloves. I will tape off the front of the lens round the lens cap with painters tape just to be 100% safe. Thanks for reminding me of this. Wilson

wlaidlaw Posted July 16, 2024 Share #37 Posted July 16, 2024 The other source I have seen suggested in the past is spherical headed push pins. Remove the pin and then grind half away (the pin hole side). Zeiss used blue dots on their ZM lenses, which I thought a smart differentiation move Wilson

The assistant was more than happy to suggest that I might simply hand over the lens and hang around for ten minutes or so by which time they could fit a replacement dot for me FOC. Thank You Leica Mayfair! Philip. Edited July 16, 2024 by pippy
