algrove Posted December 11, 2014 Share #61 Posted December 11, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) This thread appeared at just the right time for me -- thanks Rick always appreciate your contributions. I have just collected my shiny new silver M240 from Richard Caplan's shop in London. I thought I might sit out this model and wait for the next one. After all my M9 takes pretty much the same photos, with the same lenses and the same form factor, right? But then Leica offered £500 off for Christmas and Caplan's gave me a good exchange price so I held out no longer. I had forgotten just how many incremental improvements Leica made with this model. Was about to go back and re-read some of the reviews at initial release and in fact did re-read Jono's review (thanks there too). But this thread nicely summarises everything for me, with the added benefit of extended experience. I can only echo the majority opinion: the sum of the incremental improvements is a model which feels responsive, mature and complete. Simple to use for any experienced M user. Still wrestling with new features: LV, Movie Mode, Focus Peaking, etc. (and what is that second button on the front all about??). But loving it and no regrets. Rob-I use that second button on the front (I believe it is #3 button) for activating the focus magnification of my R lenses when in use. Then one can use the rear wheel to make 1x 5x or 10x magnification. I found that I prefer 5x.
Advertisement Posted December 11, 2014 Posted December 11, 2014 Hi algrove, Take a look here M240 - Things I like. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
toyfel Posted December 11, 2014 Share #62 Posted December 11, 2014 Great thread! Had the chance to use a M240 for a few days. By far the best digital M from my point of view (the shutter is so much better ...). Only thing I'd be missing is an M240 with a monochrome sensor. Numbers Posted December 11, 2014 Share #63 Posted December 11, 2014 I dont feel I ned to justify my Leica or spend much time thinking about my next camera purchase, but sometimes its fun to see what is out There. So I was at a camera show today at one of the major dealers here. All the major brands were represented (except Sony) I had plenty of time to look around and play with what is offered at the moment. It made me realize - I am so happy to be a Leica M 240 owner. It really is the best camera ( for me) out there, when all factors are considered.............Just felt like sharing it;)
otto.f Posted December 12, 2014 Share #64 Posted December 12, 2014 Very informative thread, thanks for starting this Rick! I am still in doubt and not in a hurry, except that it's Christmas time indeed . What surprises me a bit is that I don't hear anyone about the startup time and the 2" delay before you can shoot. Has nobody missed decisive moments, do you anticipate ( just as much as I do now with M9 btw)? Opposed to many others I do like the video on the M. I had him one weekend recently and I must say that filming with the lux75 in B&W gave impressive results. Because I own an MM I am not so much interested in the gain in B&W quality with respect to the M9
farnz Posted December 12, 2014 Share #65 Posted December 12, 2014 … What surprises me a bit is that I don't hear anyone about the startup time and the 2" delay before you can shoot. ... Maybe that's because the thread's title is "M240 - Things I like" not 'M240 - Things I don't like'. Pete.
robert blu Posted December 12, 2014 Share #66 Posted December 12, 2014 I'm still on the fence, not sure if my M7 and X1 need another sister but I find this thread interesting and a little...dangerous Thanks to all who gave contributions. robert
chris_tribble Posted December 12, 2014 Share #67 Posted December 12, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) What surprises me a bit is that I don't hear anyone about the startup time and the 2" delay before you can shoot. You won't have heard much about this as it's ceased to be an issue. All you need to do is download SDFormatter and make sure that you use this for the initial formatting of any SD card you use. You'll then find that start-up delays are a thing of the past. I was initially very concerned about this when I first got the M. Fortunately, there's no need to be. lct Posted December 12, 2014 Share #69 Posted December 12, 2014 Maybe that's because the thread's title is "M240 - Things I like" not 'M240 - Things I don't like'. Surely.

All you need to do is download SDFormatter and make sure that you use this for the initial formatting of any SD card you use. Then should I re-format it in the camera before using it, or just start in shooting?

So easy! Many, many thanks Chris!! Do you have more tricks up your sleeve?:) I was afraid that I might end up in file-numbering problems after the formatting - but no issues, just a faster camera! algrove Posted December 12, 2014 Share #73 Posted December 12, 2014 Forgot to mention another thing I very much like is when a Canikon shooter comes up to me when I am carrying my M240 and asks what film I shoot. Sometimes I say Tri-X and other times I tell them it's a new Leica digital camera. Most say they did not know Leica made digital cameras. Then when they ask the format and I tell them FF, they are in shock and when I say 24MP they go into GAS arrest.

It's the only thing that ever irritated me about my M240, and I've just had an irritate-ectomy! Thank you, thank you, thank you. ...Mike

Morry Posted December 14, 2014 Share #79 Posted December 14, 2014 It did not work for me until now with a Lexar 32Gb SDHC, just the same 2 seconds startup time I had been using Sandisk Extreme Pro 32GB SDHC UHS-I and startup was over 2 seconds. Then I read Mr. Overgaad's article stating actually for the same Sandisk Extreme Pro, 64GB should be TWICE FASTER. With some doubt I changed the card to Sandisk Extreme Pro 64GB SDXC UHS-I, and he was right. Now it is roughly 1.2seconds and my M-P has become an even better camera! So it seems that the card matters really much therefore you should better try switching to something with better startup speed because that should also significantly improve your quality of photography life with M240;)
Morry Posted December 14, 2014 Share #80 Posted December 14, 2014 Sorry correction. Improvement was from 2.5sec with 32GB to 1.7sec with 64GB. Anyway I rarely miss anything with 1.7sec startup.
