I suppose That you joke or that you have a perfect misunderstanding of X Vario !

Its optics, although little bright, is really exceptional and in fact the real signature Leitz.

The depiction of the colors of excel and, even by pushing a little the ISO, the sharpness of the images remains surprising.

The absence of an integrated sight is certainly regrettable, but is easily compensated with the addition of an external sight.

I do not extend over the very easy regulations of the parameters of this device which returns its ideal manipulation, in particular for the photos of street.

I forgive you...:)

The lens is very slow on the XV and the camera is very old. I don't see speed anywhere in this equation. Might as well go to the T and an M adaptor and be done with it. You get lenses as fast as you want with new technology and made in Germany.

If you don`t see speed anywhere with the XV then you are obviously not a street shooter or Leica veteran. An Olympus EM-1 might be the perfect tool for you. Its AF is fast.

I used my fathers Voiglander rangefinder for years and then owned a Nikon FM. I prefer manual everything from focus to exposure, so I get the XV proposition. It tried the XV and rejected it for the reasons stated above. Your mileage may differ. If I had the choice I would buy an M240 but that's not on the cards.

So for street photography the D-Lux will do just fine. I can be either totally manual for focusing and exposure or totally automatic. But I get the faster aperture lens the XV doesn't have.

Street starts at f5.6 or better f8, unless the sensor is tiny. And I have not seen a distance scale on the LX100 for zone focusing. So its either AF or MF. Both are too slow for street.

For me, 'street' starts at f/1.0 after dark and a little narrower during the day to separate subject from background. Personally, I hardly ever zone focus for street.

The DL109 displays on the LCD and in the EVF a scale indicating where the focus is between you and infinity and it's quite a neat system and can be enhanced using Focus Peeking to show exactly where the focal plane is. DoF can be displayed using the Preview function that can be assigned to a button on the rear for speed and ease of use. It has to use the Preview function for DoF to stop the lens down to the selected aperture because metering is done with the lens wide open.

The DL109 also shows a brief, sliding in-picture display of shutter speed and aperture as though looking down on the top of a lens, which is rather neat and colours it deep red where the combination will cause under- or overexposure. The display can be temporarily re-displayed by altering aperture or shutter speed.

What exactly is the difference between the Leica d-lux 109 and Panasonic's lx100??

Hi BB. I'll add my vote for the D-Lux 109 to replace the Digilux 2. I purchased my Digilux 2 new in 2004 and this has been my only camera for the past 10 years. With technology marching on, I felt the Digilux 2 was starting to limit me. I've been waiting patiently for several years and I just couldn't find the right replacement until now.

Back to your question... I got both the Leica and Panasonic to compare before making my final purchase decision. I shared my thoughts in another thread, but I'll mention them here. Besides the obvious (warranty, LR, styling), I heard some claims that the Leica image processing was slightly different (i.e. more "natural"). There are some professional reviews that say there is absolutely no difference. I wanted to see for myself. I didn't do anything scientific and I'm not a professional, but for ME, I did notice a very subtle difference (emphasis on subtle). The images are very, very close, but I prefer the OOC from the Leica. Unfortunately, there is nothing official from Leica to substantiate/disprove this. This has been debated in the past, including the Panasonic version of the Digilux 2 as well as other Pana/Leica clones.

Other differences... The Panasonic has a very nice built-in grip and the thumb grip on the back is more pronounced--thus the Panasonic is easier to grip with one hand. The Leica has an optional grip, but it is an extra cost option and uses the tripod mount, so that would make access to the battery/card more cumbersome. For me, this was not that important because I use a neck strap and I prefer the styling/design of the Leica.

Finally, I've not read this anywhere else... The included straps are different. The Panasonic uses a triangular ring and the strap is adjustable. The Leica has a round ring with leather protector and fixed length strap. The Leica strap is becoming an issue for me because it does not drop down when I put my face up to the EVF. I've already started looking at alternatives. On the other hand, the Panasonic design allows the strap to drop down on the lug mounts when raised.

In the end, I chose the Leica. Either one is a great camera and you will be very pleased.

Edit: I forgot to include... D-Lux does not support AVCHD video. Leica's top two ISO settings are slightly different.

Last question.....What are the opinions of the V-lux 114??? I love the feel of my Digilulx 2 and although I like the d-lux 109 I was wondering if the V-lux 114 would be more similar to mine. Compactness isn't an issue for me right now.

Sorry, Barb, I've never owned or used the V-Lux line so I don't think I can help.

Having the Digilux 2 and possibly moving up to the D-lux 109, what , in your opinions, in the Leica line, would be the next progression of camera?

It depends on what you want to shoot with the D-Lux's successor and whether you're hooked on autofocus I think. Some would say the X range but I'm not sure that there'd be a huge difference between them but if you're okay with manual focus and want to be able to use some of the world's top lenses then it would be the M range. Rangefinder photography is a little different from photography with dSLR or compact cameras so I'd urge you to find a dealer and actually handle an M camera and lens before making your mind up.

Take the negative comments about the X Vario with a pinch of salt and read Don Morley's XV thread http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-x1-forum/342623-leica-x-vario-x-series-firmware-2.html … but start with the final post therein where Don gives his blessing to the camera and praises its qualities.

And if you are wondering who Don Morley is, Google 'Don Morley photographer' … he probably has more in-depth experience of using different cameras including Leica cameras than most members of this forum.

Don Morley: Photo professional and Leica fan — macfilos

The relative slowness of the XV's zoom lens aperture is deliberate; it's one of the finest zoom lenses ever designed - fully usable at any aperture through its zoom range and up to ISO 3200 ( a bit grainy thereafter at ISO 6400 and 12500) The macro mode is pretty good too and when used with an achromatic close-up lens attachment (I use modified Leitz (Leica) Elpro c/u lenses with my XV) near life size images (on the sensor) are possible.

Mike Evans' (Macfilos) X Vario review is worth reading too

Review: Leica X Vario, a misunderstood gem — macfilos

Another X series camera worth considering especially if on a budget is a secondhand Leica X1 - it has a genuine Leica, reasonably fast, fixed prime lens … equivalent to 36mm focal length on full frame.

Most of the negatives that Don Morley ascribes to the XV seem to have been overcome with the 109. DP Review also gives the 109 a good bill of health when it comes to IQ and lens performance.

If the IQ is not good enough on the 109 it probably pays to jump directly to the T and then you have access to a wonderful pool of some of the best lenses on the planet and a modern UI.

  • 3 weeks later...

Thank you everyone! I am just an amateur who somehow stumbled onto the Digilux 2, years ago, and love it. I had decided between the dlux109 and vlux 114 and the latter won out. Having it in-hand, I realized that I didn't want to 'replace' my beloved digilux 2 and not use it, I wanted something to step in when needed, such as in low light conditions or when on holiday. So, as a woman's prerogative, I've exchanged it for the d-lux 109 and am waiting for the post's delivery. I'm sure this camera will line up nicely when needed. My other decision has been--, that I don't aspire to be a professional photographer-- and that at my age of 60+, I intend to use it for my own personal creativity. This last decision has helped me greatly with my first needed one. Being honest with one's self, helps someone like me, not get caught up into the brilliant-ness of the many excellent people and products out there! If , by chance , a photo that I take has it's 15 minutes of fame somewhere in the future, then that's a wonderful thing. I thank you all for your input on various threads I've had and to say it's a comfort to know that you're all right here, if I need you! Happy New 2015 Year to everyone!
