D-Lux 109 is a very nicely built camera for sure! I have it for 2 days now and I love it.

But unfortunately I will not be able to carry it with me at all time like my previous DL cameras. It is really very big and would not fit in any pocket!

I also find the menu very different from the 3 DLs that I have owned before. It has too many electronics and features to learn about! I wish they had kept it as simple as the Leica cameras are so appreciated for!... I would take me some time to understand before using it!

I completely agree that this camera is made for you! It does look quite a bit larger than the old D-Lux but...never mind.

Enjoy it and start posting please! Can't wait to see what gems you will produce with this new camera.

BTW, I posted some first impressions about my D-Lux typ 109.

It is indeed quite large compared to my previous Leica D-Lux 4.

Unfortunately I sold my D-lux 4 some days ago.

Maybe I should have kept my D-Lux 4 as the pocket-camera, but as I know from

experience I, personally, always use the best camera at my disposal anyway ... nowadays this being the Typ 109

I finally got my Leica Typ 109 yesterday after it arrived at a Leica shop in Belgium.

 

Being able to visually compare this Leica typ 109 version with the (two color) LX100 versions I had seen earlier it is my (personal!) strong impression the Leica looks way better and more valuable for sure (and not only because of the nice red dot :-)).

 

This Leica version is a real beauty.

 

Even more so than I expected from the many pictures I had seen of it !

 

Build quality is truly amazing (I expected no less from Panasonic/Leica tough).

 

The back plate read .... MADE IN JAPAN ! And not China as the LX100 (or so I read), for those who care about this -because of QA- like I do.

 

First thing I tried, once the battery was inserted: the EVF/LVF diopter adjustment wheel ... because from what I read about the LX100 that has caused problems for some people. But luckily not so with my D-Lux ! I could immediately adjust diopter perfectly.

 

The D-Lux EVF, in 16:9 aspect ratio because that's what I will use, is incredible: bright, tack sharp , very fast refresh rate and yes in 16:9 ... *more* than big enough.

 

Yet, in 4:3 ratio it is a fair bit smaller indeed, as some people reported. But no showstopper I would think.

 

The back LCD screen is, IMHO good too, but I was unable to try it out in bright sunlight yet.

 

The camera is very responsive.

 

I'm not yet in a position to have a valid impression about any JPG/RAW and/or movies from it.

 

Now important: the Cokin 3.3 wide "ultra slim" and light 43 mm UV filter works perfectly, also with the lens cap ! (40 EURO)

I could screw it IN ... yes, completely ! ... and dunno whether I'll be able to get it out again later on once it further fixes itself.

it fits perfectly ... but is quite tight, even a bit wider filter on the lens might make it even too tight !

 

The registration and LR5 software download process (from the nice Leica website) is seamless too.

 

The extra registration code can come in handly for the children or so (but, who does not have the in fact must-have LightRoom by now?).

 

I can't be more pleased with the Leica version !

 

The Leica version, again IMHO, is *more* than worth the extra 100 EURO I paid for it.

I think the size of the D109 is a little deceptive; yes it's bigger than the D-Lux 5 but not that much bigger. I had the leather 'garage door ' case for my D-Lux 2 and when I moved to the D-Lux 5 it still fits the D-Lux 2's case even with a 'barn-doors' lens cap on. I could slide the D109's body into the case with the EVF protrusion at the top so I don't think it's that much bigger than the D-Lux 5 in reality. Sure the EVF and larger lens diameter prevent the D109 fitting far enough to be able to use the D-Lux 2's leather case <sob> but it's not so far away. Now I'll have to find another case for the D109 that fits onto my belt like the D-Lux 2's does.

 

It's a dinky little flash unit isn't it? My battery's still charging - does it work well?

The flash works as expected.

But I personally like pictures I got from the 109 better without flash (but that's not always an option).

But, of course, as with all add-on flashes ... it's not something we are going to put on the camera if we're in a real hurry to take that once-in-a-lifetime picture.

I would guess we'd better put this flash on the camera *all the time* when we think we just might run into photo opportunities.
