Other manufacturers' products have also been introduced with faults which should have been sorted pre-launch e.g. Nikon's D600 and D750. I recently listened at length to a professional press photographer who was unhappy with his D750's flare problem.

Yes that is true, but by model numbers rare and they have or are sorting things quickly, whereas it has almost become the norm for Leica to launch with what turn out to be quickly spotted problems that then take FAR too long for the company to do anything about. Don

Yes that's true … but Leica does not have the resources and economies of scale to remedy problems as quickly as Nikon and Canon. Hopefully the situation will improve now that the new factory is operational.

Had the opportunity to pick up and try the Leica X at the enormous photographic trade show at the NEc a couple of days ago, and I was very tempted by the fact that there was £300 show discount. This would have pretty much have paid for the visioflex viewfinder that I wanted to try with it, but alas they didn't have one on the stand, which considering the scale of this show was a disappointment .

Hi, I'm sure theres plenty of very nice used about, I purchased the Oly" EVF (used from B&H) $125 in perfect condition..(I'm not bothered by the silver EVF on the black XV) The images are what count....:)

I too was a naysayer, despite being a fan of the Leica X line. But, it wasn't until I handled then shot with the X Vario that my feeling of doubt turned into belief. Now the X Vario is by far my most used camera as its versatility, joy of use and image quality, leave nothing to be desired in a daily shooter.

Whilst I agree with most others have said I actually blame Leica not just for the X-Vario's lack of marketing success, but for a rather sorry list of similar failings even with the m and T ranges caused each time via them going to market too soon with insufficiently well tested cameras.

For instance hence them not discovering the M8's IR problem until long after the camera was launched, :)

I can never believe Leica didn't know of the so called, IR problem. It would have been far too obvious in any beta testing of the initial camera and software. Sometimes I think "some of us are fooled some of the time..."

However the filters work for me..:)

Don I know you are quoting the accepted explanation...so not particularly directed at you.

As far as I know they certainly knew about the IR problem, but somebody misjudged the importance. After all, this was a time that for instance the Nikon D70 and other cameras exhibited similar (albeit less severe) colour shifts without the customers complaining.

Hmmm. Thanks for your input Jaap, as you are one of the experts on the Leica design and thinking. Your explanation "misjudged" sounds solid.

Trickery, myths and falsities...I love to bust. :D

I've been loath to open a post, as it's all a bit "old hat".

The "just newly discovered" has always been a problem with me, and am looking for a prime reference regarding this issue from Leica...and their acceptance needing filters.

As you know I love the filter tuning for the sensor. Eventually I hope to find something along the lines...

" ...we knew during our testing , which can be thought of as an asset for IR and fine tuning and resolution of the sensor receptors. We will happily give (free) filters to those new Leica M8 owners.." or similar.

I just want to see that Leica did know, before releasing the M8.

Thanks for your quick response...I won't have to mull over this all night. :o

cheers Dave S

apologies for "high jacking" the post.

Look, I think I'll leave it there.

I am obsessive...:o. A perfect Leica member really..:D

So I'll stop the hunt, and accept "misjudgement".

I trust Leica, love it's history, it's innovation, it's "Freedom Train".

All good...I'm a long term Leica devotee.

cheers, Dave S ;)

Maybe this is the very trusting attitude Leica rely on to keep selling a ever longer list of less than well tested and sorted products? Don

I think that Leica is going to dump ALL D-Lux and X models/versions pretty soon and concentrate solely on M cameras and lenses/binoculars  - the ranges that earn most money and where Leica has almost no competition. Exclusive and expensive products - life style - this seems to be the future. There are hundreds of thousands people with the right kind of money on the planet. Why should they try to compete with the likes of Canon and Nikon? A battle is lost even before it begins! Can you imagine the prices of X cameras when they become cult?????

And how do you know? I think it´s on the contrary. Pain in the...

Well, it is in their annual report of which the last one they published April 1, 2014.

Basically around one third of their revenue is from compact cameras

EDIT:

Well, I found a more recent report from 2015 (fiscal year 2014) where compact cameras are down from 85 million to 81 million while overall revenues are up from 270 to 280

Annual reports are accessible via this government site (and provided as per German fiscal requirements):

No worries. I had the exact same opinion until I checked. I am still astonished how much revenue you can generate with these relabeled Panasonic cameras.

Coming back to the original point. I think that the X Vario is the most underappreciated Leica. Unlike its reputation, it is an excellent performer and I thoroughly enjoy taking this camera with me. Based on my experience with it, I would buy it any time - at full RRP price. It took me two years to finally try it and I wish I had tried it in '13 when Leica introduced it.

Amen to that! I've shot with XVario for two years, no prob, excelent images. Last month I´ve been shooting with X113 and begin slowly to fall in love with it albeit my initial "objections" - Visoflex is great! I wish XVario had one!

Do I understand correctly that the EVF 2 is no longer being offered along with the X Vario? I bought an X Vario and in addition the OLYMPUS EVF2 (apparently the same as LEICA EVF2 apart from the brandname). To me, the viewer is an absolute must. The Olympus EVF2 works perfectly. I am happy with it.
