The beauty of the M9 is that it can even accommodate history screw mount Leica lenses, including the Summar. If I remember, Leica states that "Lenses with retractable tube can only be used with the tube extended, ie their tube must never be retracted into the LEICA M9. This is not the case for the current Macro-Elmar-M 90mm f/4, whose tube does not protrude into the camera body even when retracted. It can therefore be used without any restrictions." I have read statements from people having done measurement on retracted lenses never finding that they retracted too much. It was speculated, that Leica warns about retracting the lenses on the M9 because this may pump dust on the sensor. elgenper Posted October 30, 2014 Share #2 Posted October 30, 2014 I own both an M9 and a Summar, and have indeed tried the lens on the M9; it gives a nice, "old-fashioned" dreaminess to the image when shot wide open. Stopped down, it´s rather ugly, really, most likely due to the very odd shape of the iris leaves. However, I would never try to retract it while mounted. I haven´t done any measurements on it, but it would protrude quite a bit into the camera, and it looks like a close shave at best (and total disaster at worst). In any case, it´s not worth it; this really isn´t the kind of lens you´d want to keep on the camera while tucking it in a jacket pocket for everyday shooting, but rather a "once-in-a-while" thing for variation. Steve I confirm (at least, so is for M8 and M240... haven't the M9...), but Karl Heinz' advice is better to be followed , even if I have personal evidence that a Summicron 50 can even be mounted safe on M240 when retracted (didn't try with other collapsibles... ) Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

jaapv Posted October 31, 2014 Share #8 Posted October 31, 2014 As the register distance of digital Ms is identical to that of film Ms , there is no risk to sensor or most likely the shutter.
