Personally I wouldn't want a CMOS MM. I think that except for the glass issue, the current model is perfect.

Given a straight choice I'd rather have the more snickety shutter of the M240 than the metal driver-like ping of the Monochrom so I wouldn't say the latter is perfect but I take your point, especially re: CMOS. There is nothing else from the M240 that I'd like (though the GPS grip, if it worked, would be useful to me).

Any speculative opinion on how a B&W CMOS sensor might render images compared to a the Monochrom's CCD? Could the lack of Bayer filter makes any perceived differences even less than what people think re: M9/M240?

Nikon makes a monochrome version of the sensor used in the Df and D4, it is only available in a microscope camera. Most commercial monochrome CMOS detectors seem to be 12-bit. The CMOSIS 20MPixel monochrome 35mm sized sensor is limited to 12-bits, as are those from ON Technology. You really want 14-bits for a still camera. The Nikon sensor can do that.

While I am still fairly confident that a CMOS-based successor to the M Monochrom will come some day, I have no idea when that will be and what the camera will look like. And I guess that if a press release was imminent then I would know by this time.

I just read this yesterday In Leica rumours .

Lots of people didn't want a CMOS M either, until they tried it. The files are superb. We'll just have to wait and see on an MM version.

Compared to the M9 platform, I prefer the M for….better RF, quieter shutter (less motor re-cock), smoother shutter release, faster processor, better battery, 2m frame lines, internally lit frame lines (better VF contrast) and better weather sealing. And while I rarely use LV, it's especially nice to have just for easy lens/camera calibration tests.

Besides cover glass issues, it's nice not to worry (so far) about sensor cracks, discreet mode lock-ups (no need for any discreet mode….quiet already), SD card issues, etc.

I think it's just a better built, quieter and more robust as a traditional RF camera (the latest FW allows video and LV to be turned off).

notice a lot of activities on people selling off their M Monochrom after the rumor is out....

would the new Monochrom be that much better?

(assuming it is a M Typ 240 with a new CMOS B/W sensor)

i can be happy with a larger LCD and perhaps LV...

not so much about video either or the larger body...

may be film-like grains don't matter at similar ISO...

not very sure if you are shooting really high ISO...

may be a little peace of mind on the sensor (for now)...

what do you think? ;)

That it is highly unlikely that I would sell off a camera that gives me the images and satisfaction of use that the MM gives me.

If there is one camera I have that gives me that dead clammy hands feeling it is the Monochrom.

I am sure that a new Monochrom, whenever it comes, will be hailed as better, probably be better in a number of ways, but I very mch doubt whether that better will bring anything that I want if I judge my experience of adding the M240 to my M9. I did't want to upgrade from the M9, but the 240 brought a number of features to the table that simplified my photographic life, mainly the ability to use R lenses. I am happy I bought one and it fills my needs, but to be honest whenever I grab my M9, it feels like coming home.
