D-Lux type 109 or Panasonic LX100. Choice now more difficult

Well I have taken the plunge and gone against all of my previous advice!

I now have a Panasonic LX100. :D

Why did I change my mind?

  • Price, as the LX100 is now £699.99 in the UK a clear £125 less than the Leica type 109
  • The LX100 is complete with a built in handgrip the type 109 needs a hand grip charged as an (expensive(?) extra
  • Purchased from the UK LCE dealer group, warranty is two years
  • I do not need another copy of Lightroom!
  • It was availble yesterday when I purchased it.
  • The Leica type 109 is not available for purchase yet
  • I also get a free automatic lens hood when purchased via LCE, which might even double as a lens hood.

Finally, I can do without the red dot!

The camera is neat and easily pocketable in a jacket or winter coat pocket.

More later

Oh please. Really? I suppose you're entitled to your opinion, as ill informed as it is. What's dishonest about about paying good money for a product and returning it later, entirely within the policy of the store, if it isn't exactly what you want?

If it was good money they would not return it to you.

Their return policy is generous and is to help people who buy something they genuinely can't use. You are specifically buying something you intend to return.

It's abuse to use it as a free loan, the expense being on them.

I am not sure why you think they are a charity!

This kind of practise will eventually end these policies and I would be sympathetic to the retailers

There was similar Post on another camera website, the guy purchased a Printer/Scanner, copied his bits N pieces then returned it.. Most people are against this type of action..

I'm not either in agreement or disagreement on the Return Purchase policy..

BUT, anyone taking advantage of this type of Return Policy would be advised to boast less about how they arrive at their decision.. I hope the PanY gives the results he requires and that the Service he might require will be up to the standard he expects.. For the little extra, Leica offers REAL piece of mind & superb customer service.. :)

I caved too. Canceled the 109 and ordered the LX100. Logic? I don't shoot jpgs. After a couple of weeks of thought the US cost difference and built in grips were enough to change my mind. This will be my P&S, replacing a RX100 II and viewfinder. It will see additional use when my neck and shoulder complain about the weight of the M. As my RX100 II has less than 2k shutter actions and the RX100 it replaced (my wife's now) still has under 2k shutter actions, I can't see spending and extra $300 for a camera that based on my consumption and the camera industry patterns will probably be replaced in a year. I should add that Sony's interface like most cameras from the orient is difficult, especially with diminished nerve function in the right hand. Obviously this discourages use and may be the fatal flaw in my logic. I have great hopes that having a proper controls for aperture and shutter speed in the right places will make this a camera a joy to use and a keeper, a mini-M. Time will tell.

£55

Cost is just one issue. The 109 with grip looks clumsy and is more bulky in comparison to the integrated grip of the LX100 which is streamlined and does not increase the size of the camera. You (may) also need to remove the grip on the 109 in order to change the battery and memory card.

I'm thinking of trading in my D-Lux 5 for this, and frankly would prefer to wait for the 109. I happen to like the grip and have had no issues with the one I added to my DL5.

My bigger question is whether this is a better camera (IQ etc) than the X-Vario that I was also thinking about.

Anyone care to give their opinions on that one?

Harold, you don't know what you are talking about. What on earth does this mean: "the policy ... is to help people who buy something they genuinely can't use. "? Who buys something they genuinely can't use, keeps it for up to 30 days and sends it back? Why does their policy say "if FOR ANY REASON you are dissatisfied... We will accept returns within 30 days" if what they mean is " If you genuinely can't use it you can return it"? Seriously, please explain.

My intention is to buy and keep one of these cameras... The Leica or the Lumix. Neither has ever been available to see or use for the general public. In addition, information about the cameras has been pretty light so I don't have a lot to go on. I have no idea which will be a better fit/value for me until I actually see and use them. I guarantee that they are happy as can be to send a paying customer 2 cameras with the likelihood that one will come back in "as new" condition.

In fact, they say they are fine with sending me both and having me return the one I don't want to keep - as long as I do it within 30 days AND it is returned in "as-new" condition. It is a commercial transaction where both sides know what each intends and what the terms of sale and return are. The fact that you can't comprehend the commercial value of such a policy for the retailer does not mean it is not valuable to them or that it is "charity".

But, ok, since I can't use both, I'll send back the one I "genuinely" can't use. Does that help?

PS: These types of return policies are becoming more prevalent, not less. They won't be going away soon because they are good business.

Whilst the image of the Dlux does appear neater I agree, but when the camera is switched on and the lens automatically extends, they both look cumbersome! Both cameras produce very good images; certainly my LX100 produces images equally as fine as my more expensive m4/3 cameras.

I love the analogue controls on the camera body and ability to customise other buttons to one's own personal style. The viewfinder is OK but not as good as my Oly E-M1. For those needing visual correction, the VF adjustment dial is worth spending time to get it just right. The lens is gorgeous, perfectly useable at max aperture. I have no complaints with jpeg image colours OOC but these are adjustable in menu anyway and if these still are not to your liking there is always the RAW alternative.

My grouses only concern the lack of filter thread. but I daresay some oriental is already working on an ingenious add-on extra as I write these words! ;)

Are you sure there is no filter thread? The manual identifies a filter diameter of 43mm and mine (LX100) does-upon close examination- appear to have filter threads. I don't have a 43mm filter to actually test the threads right now.

Hi,

in front of the front lens is definite a 43mm filter thread for attaching a lens hood or filter.

I would suggest that you keep D-Lux 5 even after you buy a D-type 109, based on my own observation comparing the IQ in-between. But the perception about IQ is quite subjective!

Looks good but I'm not a fan of half cases. If I were to go with the DLUX 109, I would hang out for an add on rubber grip, something like the one Sony offers for the RX100.

Thank you and to everyone else who has corrected my erroneous post. I really must get into the habit of reading the manual first!
