Lloyd is not exactly in love with Leica Inc and visa versa, so I would take his claims of selling a Leica lens for a Zeiss with a grain of salt, so to speak. Doesn't mean it is isn't a good lens, and I am very interested in buying it myself, but his is not a voice I trust as being impartial. IMHO
.

He's shown a strong bias for Zeiss over Leica for a long time, not that he doesn't praise the occasional Leica lens or that the new ZM 1.4/35 isn't better than the 35 Summiux FLE.

So you only trust someone as being impartial if he is in love with Leica...

Quite an interesting concept of impartial...

Since I'm a film-only guy (and still have about 40 rolls of Astia in the freezer), I'm not going to pass judgement until I see some slides on a color-corrected light table, via my 6x Schneider asph loupe, and some glass-mounted slides projected onto a matte screen.

I guess I'm of the "Steve Huff" school, viz., let's see some real-world examples.

Well...... for someone like me that doesn't use 35mm a lot the Leica 35 FLE is a lot of cash to cough up for a fast wide angle lens ......

This solution looks perfect to me........ and the lens is not big ...... just bigger than some others. In the value for money stakes it looks a winner.

I have a silver on order and surprisingly was told my dealer is expecting stock fairly soon and not the 'later in the year' times quoted elsewhere. As they are a big Zeiss seller I presume they have the correct info .... we will see......

Ken Rockwell's imput would be appreciated in this top match of photography gurus.

..... err .... who will no doubt say that the lens is great but that a true 'Leica Man' will settle for nothing less that the 35/1.4 FLE.......

I could write the review myself for him without even trying the lens ......;)

I haven't seen any information about Zeiss and Leica relative manufacturing size, my guess is that Zeiss is larger, anyone know?

Please do this, I think it would be of value (and fun) for us who have orders and waiting.

While Lloyd Chambers may not be a fan of 'Leica Inc', a careful read of his studied reviews would show that he heaps great praise on Leica glass when deserved, despite the unabashed Zeiss rendering preference. Remember too that his style of shooting involves more landscape work than most of us indulge in, and a heavier reliance upon live view and tripods so his preferences and sensitivity to flatter field curvature, pin-point focus accuracy and minimal focus shift are accordingly weighted. Sean Reid's work is more reportage-style/street/events and his technical observations may better suit M users (rarely at variance with Lloyd's findings, BTW--I subscribe to both sites). Sean's bias, if one can be discerned, seems toward appreciating the real value of Voigtlander glass. Perhaps something a hardened Rockwellian 'Leica Man' might dismiss out-of-hand.

As for Rockwell, he doesn't take himself too seriously, why should anyone else? His 'Leica Man' entries were amusing, though.

Very well said and I agree how you reviewed the reviewers :D

Anyway, I am looking forward for the new Zeiss. 35 FLE is my on list of lenses to get, but I also realize it's weaknesses - in some circumstances harsh bokeh and extreme price. So I don't see any problems Zeiss potentially surpassing 35 FLE's performance. I am mainly concerned about the size of the new Distagon - I wish I had a chance to hold one on my hands to see for myself :o

As a point of reference. I prefer my reviewers to show no bias towards any one manufacturer. I am not looking for validation but information. In the end, I will go and try the lens and see for myself. As I noted, I am rooting for it as it is something I am biased to buy. But we will see when it arrives and we can have a thread showing your shots

It is compact compared to the FE mount version which was announced yesterday as well. It's the third lens from the left. Absolutely enourmous. About the same size as the 24-240 powerzoom on the far left. What the eff!!:

Is this Sony's design with with Zeiss's approval for Zeiss label?like Panasonic designed lens for Lumix that carries Leica brand name?

I've calculated lens volume (cubic cm) assuming simple cylinders and using the maximum diameters in the lens specs, and took about 13mm off the specified length of the Zeiss (looking at the photos of the lens the lens extends back from the flange to a similar extent to the Leica lens. So:

35 Summilux ~113 cc

35 ZM ~ 164cc

This is a much bigger lens.

Having said that I am interested in giving it a test drive.

Real pics, and prints, of course provide the real test.

For those who like stats, though, Zeiss lenses tend to compare well to Leica counterparts, except for the size issue, as Puts shows in this comparison of 50mm lenses. As he says, it's a lot tougher to produce technically stellar results in a small package. Whether one prefers the rendering is another issue.
