Leica S for wildlife photography

Despite my reservations it's still very tempting. The worst-case scenario is that I use the 280 and crop to the DMR's sensor area and I'm no better (or worse) off than with the DMR and have the option of the bigger sensor when composition allows and/or critters cooperate.

Doug,

My initial observations from using the S with the 280/4 and 1.4x is that it is perfectly doable. If you can do it with a monopod, all the better. Focussing is a dream, so you'll be very happy after the DMR. It's just the motion blur, which needs to be overcome.

Could you please post a photo of your lens attached to the S? Just curious how it works.

Добрый день, любители Leica!

Google translate anyone?

No, it does not sell! I would like to also learn about the process of fixing this lens for S2 ...

There is Red Dot Forum where I think this subject was discussed.

Ok, as promised, here are some pics of the Lei-ko adapter with my S 006 with the 280/4 APO with 1.4x APO converter.

Pics of the adapter plate itself, plate attached to the lens and the whole camera/lens assembly.

The Lei-ko adapter is 500 Euros inc European shipping from Michael Leibfritz at Leibfritz Konstruktion. I think it should work fine with the Modular APO-Telyts without modification to the infinity focus limit, but please check with Michael first.

Just to say that the adapter is easy to use. You attach the adapter to the lens first. Then attach the adapted lens to the S body.

In order to remove the adapter plate, you pull out the small hook or lever shown at 4 o'clock on image 2, then rotate the adapter on the lens. This lifts out the brass locking pin seen next to the hook/lever at 4 o'clock on image 2 and at 8 o'clock on image 1.

PS the spring on the hook/lever may be stiff initially, but loosens up quite quickly.

Talking about the telephoto lenses. What is the opinion on the Contax Tele-Apotessar 350/4?

I have never used the Tele Apotessar, but I think that it can be adapted with the workings autofocus.

I've got an M240 and Nex6 and have used both with my 400/6.8, and just don't care for an EVF. I much prefer that lens on my Canon 5D. And I have the original 12mp version. I imagine a MkII or III would be even better.

I too have been tempted by a used S, however I sold my R lenses some years back so there would be that expense also. I loved the 280/4, and the (original) 280/2.8 was a nice lens also. But I passed on the DMR and decided to get out of the R system altogther. I must say I have not been at all unhappy with Canon L glass though, and the image stabilizer has allowed me to cheat a bit on carrying a lighter tripod for which my back is grateful :)

My experience with Canon L glass was not as positive as yours has been (likewise the viewfinders and file color quality). There are probably some apertures and distances where some L lenses will test nearly as well as R lenses but I'd rather not be either limited to those conditions or accept lower imaging quality (to say nothing of mechanical quality and handling).

Today I had an opportunity to work with a Sony A7.

First impression: I'm totally spoiled by Leica-R viewfinders.

Next thought: How to save up for a used S2 and R adapter.

Doug,

Have you considered a Nikon D810 for use with the APO 280/4 and APO-Extender 1.4x?

Adapting the extender only. That would keep your options for the lens open.
