I am thinking of upgrading my M7, its old and has the M6 viewfinder. The glare is driving me crazy. I would just send it in to Leica for the upgrade but it's very expensive and Leica is very very slow.

I'm pretty sure that the price difference between my trade in towards a newer M7 and the price of an upgrade is large.

It is my opinion that only a M7 can replace a M7, so I'm not entertaining the idea of a MP. The only problems are that my dealer only has black and mine is chrome and the emotional attachment as this camera has seen me through many difficult times where digital has failed me utterly.

Hi there Soden,

I think it's better to sell you ancient M7 for upgrading a new one with MP viewfinder...

I'm going to inquire my Leica dealer for You, I know sometimes they do it in France.

I inform You when i get the answer.

best

Thank you Doc

Sorry to say, I split my time between China and California. But you have given me enough information to go back to my Leica Dealer and ask for a better answer...

I just got a quote from Leica NJ for the upgrade. The part is $550 usd plus it will need a CLA $300 usd plus labor it exceeds $1000 total... So Leica service prices have really gone up recently

If you are committed to buying an "up-graded" finder M7, sell the old one, and start again.

I bought recently the M7 with latest finder. I particularly looked for this model, but there were plenty of models with the "older" finder, and these were priced perhaps $150 cheaper.

PM me if you want a steer on a few that I found.

That is certainly one option I am considering. The advantage of that is that I don't have to wait the six months of NJ service.

Soden, it seems too expensive IMO. It's better you keep your present camera or sell it and buy

a "new" one second hand with the MP RF.  For me a M7 is a very fast camera as said Depardon

and is good for Street Photos, if you choose "A" option :). Just choose the aperture and the

camera does the rest.

Good luck and good choice

I totally agree but it depends on the price difference between the old M7 and new M7. The last couple of trade-ins I think we're under valued with my dealer. So I told them either get me in to a newer M7 for a reasonable cost or it's going to NJ, where they will see no profit from the transaction at all. Their response was they had no M7s in stock (though 3 are listed on their site) but had a lovely MP for $3700.... I simply said either the end of my summer trip or it goes to NJ, I won't compromise.

I guess when a Leica dealer becomes a Leica boutique then an official Leica store they get airs, but it's the same sales team I been working with since 2008... So I expect better.

Soden a "new" second hand M7 is sold in France in Leica Center about 2000 Euros

with guarantee, half price of new from Wetzlar.

I don't know how much Gary has bought his M7.

If your M7 is bought new, may be it's better you pay 1000 USD for changing RF

For memory , the serial number with MP RF on M7 is up 288...

Yes, there are quite a few deals to be found for "MP finder" M7 bodies in fine condition at around £1200 in the UK (one forum member bought one recently for £999) so paying €1000 for upgrading the finder seems quite an expensive option.

Hi Henry,

I just purchased a used M7 from Camera West with a s/n 3xxxxx+.  I previously purchased a fine M3 DS from them and felt confident.

The "test" image was taken w/ fp4 Auto + 1/3.  I love the camera.  My only gripe is the cluttered frame lines. I sent it off to DAG to mask everything but the 35, 50 and 90.  Anything wider than a 35 i use external viewfinders.  Works for me!

Great thread by the way....

Hi Frank, good news and congratulation :)

"My only gripe is the cluttered frame lines".

Is it a 0.72 viewfinder ?

If it's the case , it likes mine and you must have this :

Yes Henry...it is a 0.72 and it had the frame lines you displayed above. Since I wear glasses it seemed difficult to see the 28mm lines like on all 0.72.   The main problem is the 50mm-75mm set.  Just a bit too close and I don't use a 75mm but I do use a 90mm from time to time.  When I do I slap on a 1.25 magnifier and that really helps. But all in all I'm very happy with finally having an M7 to work with....especially when I need to speed things up.

Best,

Frank

Frank , the lightmeter of the M7 is redoubtable and fast , when you choose

option "A" : "aperture priority" (I use this) or "exposure speed priority"

An example in these 2 pictures taken at 2 am

Yes , some difficulty for the 90 . Some need a magnifier x1.25 (or x1.40)

but I don't use it , nor for 90 MacroElmar * or Apo Cron 90 A nor for 135 Apo Telyt
