jaapv Posted May 4, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I had a nice M3, number below 17500, in good state, but scuffed. So I decided to get it painted black. I did a bit of Internet research and found that Shintaro was the best. I sent some e-mails, received some e-mails and duly sent my camera to Japan, I paid my 600$, got a confirmation of receipt of the camera by e-mail, and -nothing . No mails answered, a picture postcard of some tulips no response, Tom A. kindly interceded - nothing but silence. So - no camera, out of 600$ and no prospect of getting anything back - Since February 2006 !!!!

jaapv Posted May 4, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted May 4, 2007 It's hard to find a black camera in a dark room. Even harder when it has disappeared from the face of the earth.....

querstrommotor Posted May 4, 2007 Share #7 Posted May 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) It is a bad story, what happened to you!!!! I find nothing funny about such a mess!!! I cannot understand Shintaros behaviour, because he has so many serious fans, like Tom Abrahamsson, who wrote so much spectacular stuff about Shintaros work... I thought about bying an ols M3 or M2 and let him also paint the cam in black, because I love so much black painted M3 or M2 and the quality of his work seems to be outstanding... But if I hear your story, I have to find someone else here in Germany!!! Also in the rangefinderforum I guess I found an equal story.... That is not fair!!! jaapv Posted May 4, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted May 4, 2007 I am indeed regretting, Ekki, that I did not send the camera to CRR in Luton, Great Britain.
querstrommotor Posted May 4, 2007 Share #9 Posted May 4, 2007 I can really understand that, in my opinion such an old M3 or M2 are quite unike - ok there are hunderets out for sale but your one was your one... Is there no chance to reach that "mate" via phone, so that you have a personal serious talk to him??? A person who has such an outstanding reputation, like shintaro should not behave like that. Even if the cam was destroyed while doing his paint job, he should tell you the trouth and send your money back. Maybe you should contact Tom ((Abrahamsson) for getting some informations about shintaros mail address or contact data - i cn hardly beleeve that he is behaving this way, maybe there is another problem??? I think, if you share such a popularity and reputation in the scene like shintaro, you should be interested in getting this problem solved.... I send you much hope for getting back your baby... earleygallery Posted May 4, 2007 Share #10 Posted May 4, 2007 have you not considered taking legal action or at least passing it out to a local debt collection firm for further action? Unless he's dead or bankrupt you should be able to recover your loss.

thrid Posted May 5, 2007 Share #12 Posted May 5, 2007 A person who has such an outstanding reputation, like shintaro should not behave like that. You mean 'had' such an outstanding reputation. Unless the man is seriously ill (which of course we hope he isn't), he really is doing himself no good with his actions.

rafael_macia Posted May 6, 2007 Share #14 Posted May 6, 2007 Jaap, Recently, I tried to contact Shintaro via his website, regarding having an MP baseplate painted in Hammertone finish. No response. I have also heard in Leica circles, others have had problems with Shintaro. I am sorry to hear about your situation. It is a serious one. If your situation, happened to me, for sure I would go to the Japnese Consulate, ask to speak to the business attache, and ask for direction, advice, and help. Remember to always; write down who you speak to , what they say, and when it was you spoke to them. Keep after him!! Shintaro is in the process of exchanging a good reputation, for a bad one. (the latter is more difficult to lose, than the former is to gain). Good Luck! Rafael
Photoskeptic Posted May 6, 2007 Share #15 Posted May 6, 2007 Jaap, I'm truly disturbed by your experience. I, too, have a beautiful M3. I would not let it out of my sight. Those who screw over the enthusiasts on the LUF are incurring a karmic debt. If that sounds a bit dramatic, I apologise. But this is serious stuff to us Leicaphiles. jaapv Posted May 7, 2007 Author Share #16 Posted May 7, 2007 I am a bit sick amd tired of the whole thing. The consulate (I tried that) adivsed me to take legal action. Yeah - it will take five years - Japanese law is so different from ours I might not even win, and it would cost me a lot of money. Basically I have written the whole thing off..... luigi bertolotti Posted May 7, 2007 Share #17 Posted May 7, 2007 Jaap, all my sympathy to you ! "losing" a M3 or any piece of Leica is always a pity but... - If YOU lose it, damn, yourself fault - If some street thief steals it : oh, damn, risk of the biz... - If a so called serious repair shop STEALS it.. the worst thing... all of us Leica fans tend to think of our "Leica World" as made of honest people... it hurts to verify on yourself is not so... I think the name SHINTARO is cursed for all of us in this forum...
