epand56 Posted June 19, 2014 Share #1 Posted June 19, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I mainly use three lenses on my M 240: Summicron-C 40/2, Summilux 35/1.4 Asph. and Elmarit 90/2.8. All three lenses were spot on at any aperture on my M8 (and the Summicron-C still is), but on the M 240 two of them have a great focus shift. The Elmarit is totally unusable since cannot be focused at all. Anyone on this Forum experienced the same problem? Any suggestions? The Summilux is totally off at 1.4, so and so at 2 and sharp as a razor at 2.8 and on. These are 100% shots all focused on the number 2 and taken on a tripod: Welcome, dear visitor! These are 100% shots all focused on the number 2 and taken on a tripod: Thanks for any hint. mirekti Posted June 19, 2014 Share #2 Posted June 19, 2014 Have you double checked the focus by comparing RF patch and LCD screen focusing?
jaapv Posted June 19, 2014 Share #3 Posted June 19, 2014 That Summilux is well known for focus shift and the Elmarit is not completely free of it either. It appears to me that there are two factors at work here. Firstly the higher resolution sensor will render these issues more pronouncedly and secondly your M8 was probably slightly off, but by lucky chance in a way that was the best compromise for these lenses. I would send the two to Leica with an explanation of the complaint and ask for adjustment. Maybe best to send the body with it for tolerance matching. epand56 Posted June 19, 2014 Author Share #4 Posted June 19, 2014 Jaap, both the lenses were send along with the M8 to Solms to be adjusted on the rangefinder. In fact, they were spot on on the M8. I suppose I will have to di the same on the M 240.
jaapv Posted June 19, 2014 Share #5 Posted June 19, 2014 Yeah, I suppose so too...
epand56 Posted June 19, 2014 Author Share #6 Posted June 19, 2014 What is diabolic, with the M 240 is that anything is ok when using the EVF, even the Elmarit 90 focuses properly. But I don't like to use the EVF so much.
epand56 Posted June 19, 2014 Author Share #7 Posted June 19, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Have you double checked the focus by comparing RF patch and LCD screen focusing? Yes I did. In fact when the lens focuses it does it quite good, no matter the higher resolution sensor. I see that when the Summilux focuses, it is sharp as a razor even at 100% Unfortunately it does it at 2.8 and not at 1.
bocaburger Posted June 19, 2014 Share #8 Posted June 19, 2014 On my M240 my rangefinder agrees with live-view+focus peaking for all my lenses at all distances using a target which is a dark vertical line against a light background. However when I try to focus on a target that is very small and/or lacks sharp, contrasty edges, there comes a point where I can move the focus ring a little each way and not notice the change in rangefinder image. I can definitely see where the rangefinder is subject to pilot error, moreso with the digitals because not only is the sensor more demanding than film, but the RF lost a bit of magnification from the film bodies too. Mupa Posted June 19, 2014 Share #9 Posted June 19, 2014 I had the same problem with my 50mm Summilux - worked fine on the M9-P, but some back focus on the M 240. However my 35mm 1.4 works perfectly on the M 240, as it did on the M9-P.
apertur Posted June 19, 2014 Share #10 Posted June 19, 2014 Same issue with the 35 SLX FLE. Five visits/stops at Solms and one at Wetzlar didn't help. At 1.4 it is razor sharp at near distance but from 2 m onwards it has a front focus and only gets sharp at 2.8. Pretty bad for such an exopensive lens. FlashGordonPhotography Posted June 19, 2014 Share #11 Posted June 19, 2014 How are the lenses at infinity on the 240? If they're out there it's possible to self adjust the rangefinder using a 2mm allen key. It's not hard and there's a thread in the M9 section that explains it. I wouldn't do the other two adjustments on a 240 as the screws seen to have a holding laquer I didn't notice on my M9. Remember the adjustments are small. Even putting pressure on the hex screw without seeming to move it can make a slight difference. The 35mm Summilux ASPH. (pre fle) does have focus shift. Since the samples you posted improve between f 2 and f4 it looks like the system front focuses wide open, as the focus appears to be shifting rearward as you stop down. In this case you'll notice that the rangefinder patch goes too far at the infinity position (it comes up short for back focusing). With the camera upside down and looking at the hex screw you would need to turn the screw clockwise a bit. It takes me a careful 30 mins to adjust infinity on my cameras. If that doesn't do it then off to Leica they go. Gordon
