Why so many 240's for sale?

Perhaps based on how the M9's price evolved as its availability matured, and noting in the UK that the price is now generally £4799, is there a "pattern" that can be followed as a rough rule of thumb on how a new M240 will be priced going forward, ie, what did new M9s go down to in (say) 2011/12, which presumably is the 2014/15 equivalent for the M240? I'm thinking very seriously about now getting one, but obviously would prefer to avoid spending empty £s if the price could likely change soon.

Looks like the body prices at Schiphol, at least on the Schengen side, are no longer as competitive as previously since the wider market has adjusted prices downwards

M body - 6299€, the same as local

MM body - 6999€, 200€ more than the street price

However lenses are still a good price:

35mm cron - 2199€ compared to 2499€ locally

50mm cron - 1599€ compares to 1879€ locally

90mm cron - 2699€ compared to 3199€ locally

There are a lot of bugs in M240 and maybe people return them and Leica has increased production so this would give you a surplus.

A lot of M240's for sale. A lot of bugs...

At least over here, I don't find a lot of M240's for sale and up to now I haven't encountered something on my M240 that doesn't work to my liking.

Ok, as I'm in full manual, I'll probably don't have to deal with the auto iso bug I believe some are experiencing. But I also haven't had a lockup up to date.

If I'd be buying a second hand M, I can instantly find a used M9 or M8 over here, but it's less easy to find the M240 (I'm not saying we don't have any for sale in Holland).

What's a lot of bugs? 2? 4? 20? 100?

I think discounting is allowed, Schouten Select has a site wide sale, and Foto Henny Hoogeveen was happy to match schouten his price.

M240 for 4500 euro ex vat. that is €5445 including 21% BTW/VAT

In the UK last year all the Leica retailers were selling the M240 for the list price of £5100 which included VAT at 20%. The current selling price is £4799.

Apparently, Leica UK is getting a bit exercised over this discounting by their authorised dealers, especially given their own UK stores aren't allowed to deviate from the list price. Problem is, given the current strength of Sterling as against the Euro, £5,100 is a high price when compared to most other EU countries.

Sadly there does not seem to be a Leica dealer in the Channel Islands, otherwise a pleasant week-end trip could become quite profitable with an M or M lens purchase. In theory there are customs on the way back to the UK but I have never seen anything other than people being waved through, other than the track suited idiots who are obviously toting a year’s supply of booze and cigarettes.

Not sure where you get this information from but I don't think it can be true. The Bruton Place shop have given me a 15% discount on an M9P and a colleague obtained a discount on the purchase of an S plus three S lenses.

Hmmm, the lying swine told me that Leica AG prevented them from discounting and that they were also in the process of putting a stop to their authorised distributors doing it.

My understanding was that they will only give a 15% discount on ex demo models?

In Europe, there is no legal way for Leica to prevent any of their sellers from discounting. Unlike in the States sellers should remain entirely free to sell their goods at which ever price they wish. Manufacturers cannot prevent this in any shape or form. Doing so would amount to price fixing which under Article 101 of the Treaty of the European Union (and corresponding national EEA member states' competition acts) is a big no no. Such acts are punishable by a 10% fine over their national or even global turnover.

So if any Leica store rep tells you they can't then you can remind them of this ;)

The dealers have a margin of approx 20% to play with.Lots of ways of giving a discount from actual price reduction , free accessories or a high PX value for a trade in. Golden rule of getting a discount are don't ask in front of a shop full of customers and make it clear that if the dealer takes your offer you will "agree a sale immediately".If I was buying an M, I would offer 10% less that asking price then say nothing,be prepared to walk out.Having said that I would not be surprised to see M.2 or whatever at Photokina this year so the M price will drop further.
