Auto Power Off on my M240 drains battery! so whats the point if it doesn't actually turn it off?

I'm sure you understand that Auto Power Off is the setting that turns off the Automatic Power management.

Battery drain despite having selected auto power off was a hot topic about a year ago (see http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m-type-240/279361-m-240-battery-drain.html). I had this happening to me once or twice when the battery got depleted overnight. Usually this wasn’t an issue (that is I mostly didn’t bother to turn the camera off, with no ill effects) and I have never identified the specific conditions under which the rare cases of battery drain occur.

Anyway, the latest firmware has squashed a bug in auto power off so it is a good idea to upgrade the firmware if you haven’t done so already.

There were some speculation the water proof seal around the shutter release button could cause it to stick in the half-way (wakeup) position.

Whatever the cause, I had the same experience when my M240 was brand new. But the problem went away quite soon and has not been experienced since.

I had the camera mounted on the tripod and after 4 hours or so I came back and it was completely drained. on Hasselblad CFV-50 the power-off turn the back completely off but it seems on M240 it keeps the camera on and at standby mode or something. at least they could give the option :(

I have firmware 2.0.0.12 is there a new one out??

No, the M doesn’t drain the battery when it is set to power off automatically, at least not normally. As mentioned above there are freak occurrences where auto power off fails, but these are rare.

No, that one’s current.

As Rick has pointed out, Auto Power Off turns off the Auto Power options (2, 5, 10 minutes), so the camera stays ON as long as the switch is ON.

Ahem, no. “Auto Power Off” is the function that turns the camera off after after preset time. Of course you can turn this function off but while it is on it is still called “Auto Power Off”. Or in the words of the manual:

AUTOMATIC POWER OFF

This function turns the Leica M off automatically after a preset time.

Yes, and when you turn it off it is called off.

The main menu says Auto Power Off, the sub menu gives options, Off, 2, 5, or 10 minutes. If you select Off it switches Off the Auto Power function. Back in the main menu it now says Auto Power Off - Off, which means the camera stays On. Think of it like this, two negatives make a positive, On.

So before giving your condescending 'Ahem' you should acquaint yourself with the actual functions of the camera.

Steve - Yes, exactly right. The menu setting is like a double negative in English. I think it might just be one of those things lost in translation.

Given that the option has only 4 items to choose from, I don't think the entry labelled "off" is very misleading. It would have been a tiny amount clearer, perhaps, had it been called "never" or "stay on". But then, ....

If there can be a misunderstanding I imagine it is if somebody only looks at the main menu and see's that Auto Power Off is set to Off and thinks this means it is set to switch off.

The “Off” in “Auto Power Off” refers to “Auto Power Off” turning the camera off automatically. Of course when you set “Auto Power Off” to “Off” then the camera will stay on. Before Rick mentioned it I would never have guessed anyone would misunderstand “Auto Power Off” as referring to a hypothetical “Auto Power” feature being turned off.

Ahh, so now you understand.

It would be far clearer in the main Menu if 'Auto Power Off ' was simply called 'Auto Power' and then a sub menu with the settings. English is not a literal language, and Off - Off is open to ambiguity and the creation of alternative meaning.

As far as I can tell, most camera vendors call this feature ‘Auto Power Off’ – with several options, including the option to turn it ‘Off’. So when somebody not totally unfamiliar with digital cameras says he is using ‘Auto Power Off’ I would assume he has set ‘Auto Power Off’ to some couple of minutes, not that he had turned it off. Especially since there was a well-known bug in the firmware of the M that did prevent the camera from powering off automatically (under certain circumstances), so the battery drain described is not unheard of.
